Re: Try To Sell Or Part Out 83 Rabbit
I'm sure I could fix it, a friend says I'm an 'idiot' for not doing that. He's also not married and trying to balance raising kids, work, and all that. I opted to post it on craigslist for $550. I got a storm of responses from folk. There were enough serious ones that I will have it sold by today I'...

Re: Try To Sell Or Part Out 83 Rabbit
The belt I believe I got from here local at a place called Merle's. they normally sell better than average parts.
Sigh. Looking for a new car isn't fun. Off I go though.

Re: Try To Sell Or Part Out 83 Rabbit
So last night I put the new timing belt on. I have bent valves for sure. The motor sounded very different with possibly some metal sounds, but that was most likely just my loose brackets and such. Unless I somehow really botched timing it, things look bad. Glad I"m not the only one to have the ...

Try To Sell Or Part Out 83 Rabbit
I was driving to work late last week and the rabbit died as I came to an intersection. After I got it restarted, I was able to get it through and it died again. The engine didn't sound right at all. When I popped the hood, poking around revealed the timing belt had come off. After towing it home and...

Re: Please Help With Mystery Relay X And Starter No Go
Thanks for the info. I tried the ground issue yesterday by clamping jumper cables from the negative terminal to the engine block. This didn't have any effect. Today I pulled the fuse panel down off its mounts and looked behind it. There were two wires screwed to a metal plate for grounding (one wire...

Please Help With Mystery Relay X And Starter No Go
So I've had this issue for awhile were my 83 Rabbit decides it won't start. After two recent issues where I needed to be somewhere, I got fed up and started trying to figure out what's wrong. Here's what happens: - If its 'hot' outside, I live in Az so your temperature may vary, it sometimes won't e...

Re: Why does my rabbit start without glow plug relay?
I'll take a look today. I don't think this is directly heat related. If heat was affecting the starter, it wouldn't start when I unplug the relay.
It's definitely an electrical thing, but heat might be affecting the relay somehow.

Re: Why does my rabbit start without glow plug relay?
Yes, I have the automatic tranny. If the GP circuit is dragging down the juice, why is it only when the engine is hot? I don't ever have an issue when starting it cold, so the fuses should be ok right? Asking to understand more. There's a temp sensor for that circuit so that you don't heat the glow ...

Re: Resurrection of an 83 Rabbit 1.6....Maybe...Hopefully
Well I've got over 1700 miles on it since it came back to life. :) calculated my mileage a few times and I average about 33 to the gallon, which seems good for an automatic with AC. This weekend I tore the driver's door apart and lubed the window track/regulator and now it rolls up and down like new...

Why does my rabbit start without glow plug relay?
So if I drive my 83 1.6 rabbit for awhile and shut off the engine, it won't restart unless I remove the glow plug relay (the big honker on the right of the driver's fuse panel). I just hear a click with it installed when I turn the key. The yellow glow plug warming light will flash, but nothing else...

Engine Temp Needle Position Should Be Where...
I've been driving my resurrected 83 1.6 for a few months and am concerned about the way the engine temp acts. All the cars I've driven, when you warm up the engine, the temp gauge remains pretty constant. With this car, I get a lot of needle movement depending on driving, idling at a light, etc. Whe...
