1.6 vs 1.9 IDI heads

Question for you smart folks out there... I've got a 91 1.6 Ecodiesel. Currently, it has a 12mm 1.6 solid lifter engine from an 81 MK1. The original engine that came out of my MK2 is fried, my machinist said the scours are too deep to bore. So, my next step, is to rebuild the head that came off that...

Re: 91 ECOdiesel: midwest, low, turbo diesel!

Already poster it up on the 'tex ;)

18psi is great, I've got he fuel turned up to compensate for the added air. It's not fast by any means, but it's definitely fun to commute with :) Usually won't go past 10psi unless your really hammering into it, easily driveable :D

91 ECOdiesel: midwest, low, turbo diesel!

I went through hell getting this car and I never planned on selling it, especially now that all the kinks have been worked out. This car is very rust free and overall in great condition, the steering/suspension is all tight and the car drives straight. I hate to sell it since I have so much time and...

Re: pump timing + MPG's

I knew which way to rotate the IP to advance it. When i first got the motor running i kept screwing it up though lol. Unless the engine has been ran within an hour or two, I'll use the CS lever and leave it pulled out until the engine is about half way warm. Today I started it and it smoked white pr...

Re: Re:

IS MY HEADGASKET BLOWN? ...When shut down, the pressure from the cooling system can push coolant into the cylinder. If that cylinder is on the intake stroke or compression stroke, the next time the engine is cranked over it will hydro-lock if the amount of coolant in the cylinder exceeds the combus...

Re: pump timing + MPG's

It's definately a diesel knock rattle that i'm hearing, crank pulley is nice and snug. I advanced the pump too far apparently, now it makes NO noise, it's like driving a gasser... it sucks lol. It's also spooling rather slow and doesn't have the power it used to. It actually started at 40* today tho...

Re: Extended road trip, how would you prepare?

Honestly, I'd just buy a plane ticket. My car has been so enreliable since day one. I foolishly made several 200-500 mile road trips with it. The only thing to break down on the road is the stupid alternator tensioner, but after replacing the bolts that kept falling out with stronger bolts, lock tig...

Re: pump timing + MPG's

Well, I've got loads of rattling, especially when your trying to accelerate at a constant slower speed. I played with it a little tonight, pulling it back far enough so the motor would start to lower it's idle. The noise didn't really change much as I moved it though. I feel like the car performed m...

pump timing + MPG's

hey guys, My car will not start in the cold midwest weather unless i plug the block heater in. I've been told if you advance the IP timing it makes cold starts alot easier. well, I don't have a dial indicator so i have no idea what i'm running for timing. I tried to use the dial from the start of my...

Re: What's involved in a turbo upgrade?

Throw a turbo on it! I't got a 91 ECO Jetta with a motor from an 81 (12mm mech head). I immediately blew the headgasket, however Before installing the engine i decided i better check the torquing of the head bolts and probably over tightened them (70ft lbs). Right away started burning the coolant an...

Re: headgasket

Very scary!

I've surpassed the 600 miles to retorque.

but I'm still not sure if I should since the gasket said "no need to retorque"... that, and the whole fear factor thing coming in to play ;)

It's running good though. Slow, but i'm totally content :)

Re: A couple ECOdiesel questions :)

alrighty. good info everyone. I'll head out to a local VW shop/parts car hoarder and see what i can find for transmissions. Reluctantly, I took the car on a long voyage this weekend, all the way to Milwaukee Wisconsin and ended up driving over 500 miles. problems that occured ranged from a self-lose...

A couple ECOdiesel questions :)

I've finally gotten my car back on the road again, but after finally being able to drive it some things have came up that have concerned me; first off, i've hooked up a boost gauge so i could 'tune' my manual boost controller.. irrelevant, however i've noticed at highways speeds i'm running between ...

Re: how cold do you let it get before plugging in?

towards the end of spring when out average overnight temp was in the upper 30*'s F I would plug it in just to eliminate any headache in the mornings. Last night i parked in the street w/o a plug in, came out this afternoon at a mid 20's and the car refused to start, pushed it close enough to the hou...
