Re: How many amps to start these things?

I have batteries (Group 31 AGM's 1000CCA) relocated to the trunk on two of my jettas, I also mounted on board chargers (40A marine style) in the truck that is wired with the block heater, when I plug my block heater in, it also charges my batteries. I have found this EXTREMELY useful in the winter f...

TD onto '82 Vanagon 1.6 NA?

Soooo....after being a long time fan of mk2 Diesel jettas, I laid my first wrench on my new to me '82 Vanagon Diesel today. I bought it a few months ago, it had been sitting since '05 and motor condition was unknown. Previous owner hadn't even tried to turn it over. This morning I: visually inspecte...

Re: VW 1.6L Marine Engine

FYI, I work for a yacht dealership and we have a 40' sailboat with a marinized vw 1.6 from the factory. So they do exist in production form. They run a much different IP though than the automotive version.

Re: IP lever identification

Ok, thanks! So there is a lever missing going from the lower lever to the upper. That would explain the broken part on the lower arm as well then. I read a lot about these not being true turbos. I hope to change that. In the meantime since this engine is seized and I have a NA car complete except th...

IP lever identification

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2872/13457572755_1237c89083.jpg Does anyone know what this lever does? I just bought a '91 Ecodiesel with a seized engine, this lever was not connected to anything and the paint color does not match the block paint so I do not think it is original to the car. https://...

Re: What temp should 1.6 TD be at?

Took off the upper radiator hose, blew threw small line going to resevoir, very restricted, blew a lot of ait through it, still restricted. Replaced with one off of parts car, I now have a steady stream! Much better than replacing the water pump, I took a look at the water pump, and it looks clean a...

Re: What temp should 1.6 TD be at?

I agree with TylerDurden. It should have a flow of coolant consistantly. If no flow through this line, then there's no removal of air from the system, unless air burps from the return hose at the bottom of the tank. You could have a bad water pump, or a water pump where the impeller isn't properly ...

Re: What temp should 1.6 TD be at?

I bought a 180 degree t-stat. I will change that this afternoon although you just said t-stat shouldnt affect the stream coming out of the line. Just to make sure i am clear, there is NO Coolant coming into resevoir, when i rev the engine I get about 1/4 of a teaspoon to come out. then it stops agai...

Re: What temp should 1.6 TD be at?

No coolate coming out of upper tube in resevoir, does that mean bad water pump?
If i rev the engine up I get a small splash of coolant to come out but only for a split second. Water pump or t-stat? If the t-stat is closed will coolant still come out of that small tube?

What temp should 1.6 TD be at?

I just picked up another Jetta. This time a '86 TD. Seems to run GREAT. I bought it unrunning, having sat in a barn for 2 years untouched, some lubricant in the cylinders and it fired up and drove home 200 miles. Only issue i had was it threw the belts in the first ten minutes but i noticed it immed...
