Re: Little red pickup

Wonky thermostats and/or thermo-switches have cause a lot of watercooleds to lose their heads. The radio shack temp gauge in the dash doesn't help much for early warning. Maybe a sacrificed reservoir with a tire valve epoxied into it would be the next-level shop equipment. Bicycle pump for the offic...

Re: Little red pickup

It sucks that early vw diesels have such a minimal cooling system for as hard as they work.
Bigger stock radiators would have added a lot to their reliavility

Re: Little red pickup

Well it's an interesting point. Fel-pro clearly has put some thought into this "An improperly sized or placed hole can create a shortcut which prevents coolant from following the correct path through the engine. If the coolant takes a shortcut because a coolant hole is too large at the front of...

Re: Little red pickup

just glad there is a vendor that still keeps warehouse space for vw parts that others don't bother to stock anymore.
Being ONLY vw helps keep those parts on the shelves, and using oem part numbers makes HANS a go to site
for part searches even if it's only for reference.

Re: Little red pickup

I used this one, https://hansautoparts.com/068103383FMHeadGasket.aspx + hylomar spray. ARP's re-torqued 2 or 3 times Maybe that cheap gasket squeezed down to a 1ntch, but it's working Those felpro ones are nice, but when I needed one they were out. 2-notch gaskets are hard to find for some reason.

Re: Little red pickup

Dang.
A sobering reminder that the universe is not static.
I'm looking forward to learning something about this. There are a few internet discussions about this type of issue,
but are brief and don't explain much - a veil of the automotive occult.
Thanks for drinking of that cup, EH

Re: Little red pickup

the flat anti-rattle clips on my S1 kept falling off. I started putting a dab of silicon caulk on the ends to hold them to caliper, helps but has to be redone every time the brakes get worked on. Seems like there are a lot of different opinions on re-torquing the stretch bolts. I was just looking at...

Re: Little red pickup

I always try to take it easy until the engine warms and pretend that helps.
Those old mating surfaces, aluminum head on steel, 20:1 compression.
It will be interesting to hear this one may come to light.
Thanks for keeping the thread going :)

Re: Little red pickup

Just in time for Independence Day! Nothing says automotive sovereignty like a good running vw IDI.
Congrats on the creation !!!

Re: Pool Ball DIY Tire Balance

I'm surprised these seems to only be one design from china sold anywhere. Ebay has em for 66$ , HF for a bit more. The idea is so simple it's silly. Any suitable cone with a center divit balanced on a pointed metal rod would work, I'm sure there are some precision hillbilly balancers out there "...

Re: Pool Ball DIY Tire Balance

A regular level is interesting but tricky in a different way.
I think one would have to rotate the level in increments and the tire stays still.
With a good level, could even work better! (you may need to patent that idea just because  )

Re: Little red pickup

On the current pump I'm using (rebuilt at an injection shop mexicano) I had to pry the collar off to get the power I wanted. Also had to install the IP's throttle arm so I know that was correct. The fuel screw just needed a bit more. I don't mind the extra fuelly throttle. I imagine the design was t...

Pool Ball DIY Tire Balance

This is just a "ball"-park static balance of a mk1 13' alloy wheel. I got a bullseye center balance level thing from ebay and then a single pool ball from the flea market. https://i.imgur.com/yXenqhsl.jpg The pool ball jams nicely in the center on these old stock alloy wheels, https://i.im...

Re: Little red pickup

Sounds like a happy 1.6;D

I now add some sand in the reservoir with the soapy water to get scrubbing action when I clean em'. Shake n' rinse. Hot water make quick work of it.
