Re: Clutch engage safety switch

A neat thing I saw, a friend had a
80's VW Brasilia (sold in Mexico) that
had a tab welded to the brake pedal
so you could put a padlock through it
and the clutch pedal, locking the pedals
together.

Super simple anti-theft device, looked factory made.
I should have taken a picture.

Re: Altitude clatter from N/A

On a previous IP I put a spacer on the governor spring like the mod said, but I don't think it helps any. The 1.6 idi can easily use more fuel than the engine can get air for. It's not like I'm racing it. With downhill engine braking (like I said, IDI is the worst) I find most of the speed reduction...

Re: Altitude clatter from N/A

I put in a slightly stiffer advance spring, but still got no difference in clatter when the cold-start is pulled. So I reduced the internal fuel pressure by quite a bit (like 50%) and THAT made a big difference. I could hear a clear difference in the sound with the cold start pulled and actually see...

Re: FREE Transmissions

I had a 1980 Dasher w/ 4 speed that reved so high on the freeway the valves audibly tapped the pistons. Probably needed a valve adjustment. When the head was pulled all the piston crowns had dents. Still got pretty good milage. Those transmissions are more for just local driving in a small town. Dro...

Re: Altitude clatter from N/A

Well, I never messed with timing. Just added cetane booster and carried on. I don't know how much it helped. Mexican Diesel says it's 45 cetane at the pump, but I also think the fuel down there is a little thicker, less refined. The cold weather also seems to be a factor, maybe making the fuel thick...

Re: The old direct-drive starters

Looks like the valeo starter 438075 is the wholy grail. Not so easy to find and they are expensive. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/valeo/valeo-starter/veo0/438075/v/a/7505/automotive-car-2003-volkswagen-golf?q=starter+motor+automatic&pos=3 O'reallys also sells just a solenoid for $200 :lol...

Re: The old direct-drive starters

I swapped out the solenoid with 2 different ones, confirming it wasn't the solenoid. That's a great trick to know about loosening the terminal post and rotating it! but this was a case of worn brushes and one was about to fall out. I didn't take note of the part number for that bosch brush p...

The old direct-drive starters

The starter in the 1.6D was good but not great for a long time. I had good cables and grounds and even a 1000 CCA battery and that thing did fine to start the engine, with glow plug help. Then it got slower and slower until I got it fixed at a auto-electrico. He put a new bosch brush pack in and fix...

Re: WTB: Vane style vacuum pump

I think with the vane style pumps it's mostly how much play up and down of the shaft and how it sits against the lid to get a good seal. The last time I worked on some of those, replaced that dealer-only seal but ended up swapping lids to finally get one working really good. I wonder if that gear is...

Re: WTB: Vane style vacuum pump

I wonder who makes the best diaphram kits for the oldstyle vac puumps.. Seems like that material should be better these days, even original ones lasted a long time. I'm also wondering why the old style ones didn't just vent to the atmosphere, less resistance. Do they leak oil out when the diaphram f...

Re: Diesel Fuel Tank Removal

biocides are good to use every once in a while, especially for fuel jugs that sit.
Stuff the truckers use will last a long time with vw-sized doses.
The one I have is call biobor JF.

I bought a brake booster from this guy several months ago, just to have a spare.
He's been trying to sell his hoarded stash for a while,
might still have it.

Re: Diesel Fuel Tank Removal

I like to use these cheap mercedes filters as a pre-filter (strainer) before the main fuel filter. Nice to see whats coming out of the tank. If they get clogged up it's easy to remove it, clean it out backwards, and put it back on. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=11122497&cc=1193789&...

Re: Diesel Fuel Tank Removal

Be prepared to clean more than just the tank. Might have to fix some body rust

If nothing has moved for 6 years, that fuel pump and the injectors may be stuck inside with old fuel gunk.
That's another topic.

Is that a plastic tank?.

Re: Altitude clatter from N/A

I have a little house just north of Ixtapa that i try to visit, check on, at least once a year. These folks seem to know most about what's happened in Acapulco https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g150787-i177-k14568764-o70-Hurricane_Otis-Acapulco_Pacific_Coast.html I wouldn't play with mixing gas ...
