Re: Powering a Digital Radio in a Mk2 - How to
That's probably a good idea. Thanks.

Re: How many amps to start these things?
I might also recommend a ground-strap between the body-work and the starting motor itself... Just to be sure.

Re: How many amps to start these things?
If my memory was any worse, I could plan my own surprise-party. You might be okay after all.

Re: How many amps to start these things?
Behind the passenger seat might be okay, but I think you'll want larger wire.
You might luck out and find an old truck at a junkyard with what you need.
Good luck to ya, buddy.

Re: How many amps to start these things?
Uh-oh... This might be a bad idea. Are you damn sure there's no working around the battery where it is? The problem isn't just the current capacity of the wire itself, but also voltage-drop, which is especially pronounced at low voltage and high current over long runs. Somebody, possibly on another ...

Re: Powering a Digital Radio in a Mk2 - How to
That's a nice idea. I used to drive a 1990 Volvo 240 (gas burner) with ignition-dependent headlights. With the switch in the headlight position, everything went dark with the ignition off, but in the marker-light position, the marker-lights were on regardless of the ignition switch. I just left the ...

Re: Powering a Digital Radio in a Mk2 - How to
That works. Well done. Be careful when buying a radio with a USB port - some of them are for charging only, so be sure to read the labels. Alternatively you could get a radio with an audio input jack. There's a special connector - looks like a wire with a headphone plug at both ends - which can be c...

Re: injector strategy
That's actually a really good idea, especially since you already know how to check spray pattern with the engine. I don't know about the fittings; you may have to somehow fit the end of an old injector line to the top half of an injector... Alternatively you could make up a device that replaces the ...

Powering a Digital Radio in a Mk2 - How to
After removing 14 speakers installed over the years by former owners, and installing four new used ones in the empty slots where the originals were, I finally installed a new used radio in my '85 Golf project. The included radio was aftermarket with a CD player I'll never use and a bright blue LED d...

Re: injector strategy
Interestingly I checked my injectors recently using the Hagar Method, and they all bottom out at just about 240º... a mere 100 bar. I might have them pop-tested when I can afford it. The nozzles turned out to be French even though the injector-bodies say Brazil, so I shouldn't complain too much.

Re: injector strategy
Keeping upright, unscrew each in turn, until you can just part the body. Now using the point of separation as a reference angle, count the number of turns before the spring starts to be compressed. Are you sure that's a good idea, Mark? I know you like to think outside the can, but it seems that wa...

Re: Buy or Pass??
Looks relatively solid to me. Certainly fixable; much worse has been fixed. Go into the projects forum and find a thread call "R.I.P. Old Blue". It's inspiring. As for the engine, something might have broken apart internally (chunks in the sump). If it locked up on a freeway, there's a goo...

Re: Buy or Pass??
Welcome aboard. That is a nice little truck, but $1700 sounds high to me. Maybe it's just a regional difference. Anyway... I'm afraid we'll need more information on the nature of the engine's failure to determine whether it's fixable. That is, if you plan to repair it yourself. Those engines are pre...

Re: Mk2 / Mk3 Floor-Pan Interchange?
On further research, I may have found the answer on seat interchange. A few people have forced Mk3 seats into Mk2s by cutting off the outboard leg and re-attaching it "a couple inches" inboard to fit the (apparently narrower) Mk2 track. So I have the choice of cutting and welding the seats...

Re: All rear lights suddenly out
Yes, it's for real if they issue a ticket for it. Could be as simple as a flaky fuse. If you're working alone like I usually do, try to get backed up to a glass storm-door or something to use as a mirror while you work. Wiggle the fuse, jiggle the switch, jimmy the wires, all that sort of thing. Int...
