Re: tdi or idi what do you people like better???
Having both, a 1993 passat aaz and a 1997 tdi, the power is better and mileage on the tdi. However the main difference on the highway is the speed of the motor. The final gear ratio is different on the tdi allowing it to run about 500 rpm less on the freeway at 100 km/h. Much quieter!

Although the front engine mount on the gas motor will fit on the diesel it is the wrong one as the diesel takes an hydraulic mount. Makes a world of difference.

ON the 1.6's we have replace numerous head gaskets where the oil seal on the head gasket has failed and resulted in oil entering the water. We have used Dawn detergent or castol oil eater to flush out the system, replace coolant and expansion tank and never had any oil reappear.

Check the blue wire that runs up underneath the battery to the dash. It is the light for the red battery light that energizes the alternator. If it is broken the alternator will not want to charge.

run your glow plug wires longer. Have each plug run to the terminal that connects to the old bus bar. Join them with a bolt and nut. Now to check glow plugs you can check the plugs individually by taking off the nut. Also hand to install new plugs. Loosen the 8 mm nut a bit. Undo the glow plug with ...
