Re: 1.6 head on 1.5 block?
Extra hose on the front of the block? Like something to reduce crankcase pressure? And you connect it to the pcv on top of the valve cover??

Re: Possible engine swaps
Hell yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I know you said there was a lot of part swapping to get it all together but are the mounts the same as the mounts on a 1.6? Is this engine IDI and purely mechanical? Is the manifold the same as the 1.6 with the same ports and all or is it a 1.9? And what kind...

Re: Possible engine swaps
Durden, if you don't mind me asking what's the 1.9 engine in your vanagon listed in your signature? Mechanical engine? Is that another possible route?

Re: Possible engine swaps
So there is one but it's hard to find? Especially in the US? Bummer... what separates it from the tdi aside from ecu, pump, injectors? I assume I would look under early 1.9 tdi for parts aside from what I mentioned? And I assume it will mate up with any mk2 trans?

Possible engine swaps
Always loved the 1.6's, I daily drive and maintain them even before I had a license... that being said I'm not all too familiar with the different generations of vw diesel engines. I know mk3's-4's had tdi, but is there an upgraded mechanical engine? (not ecu/computer controlled or assisted please, ...

Re: Turbo help needed
I know, that is honestly what I was trying to avoid. I don't have access to compressed air really. However the consumption of oil by the engine doesn't "appear" to be the problem though, even though there is evidence in the exhaust (turbo related?) I'm convinced it is turbo related conside...

Re: Turbo help needed
Oil pressure, boost, and egt gauges are installed... love the ability to keep an eye on what's going on. I have a lead on a k14, stock equipment or equivalent is all I'm really looking for. The intake port on these are trapezoid shape I'm told, correct? Looking for an accurate reference of what exac...

Re: Turbo help needed
Unknown miles on both, 460-430-ish compression though. Now I do run thicker, non-synthetic 20-50 because I like how the oil pressure acts with the thicker oil so any thoughts? I'm close to just cutting my losses and getting an upgrade. Now I'm asking this because I'm not 'turbo-experienced'... what ...

Turbo help needed
1.6td, mk2 Pretty warm, decent weather right now for those who are curious. Starts great, little puff of black on startup, normal yes but after 4-5 minutes of warmup it starts HAZING blue smoke, at that point I'll play with the cold start lever and it blows out occasional perfect little blue smoke r...

Mk2 temp sensor
Stupid question, but could not find a clear answer elsewhere so figured I'd ask... Is it normal for a mk2 1.6td to have the coolant light flash *before* actually starting the engine?? Like while glow plugs are on, on a cold start more specifically, ie when the head/engine is not already warm. Just f...

Re: 1.6td problems
Car is officially running better than it ever has in my ownership and couldn't be happier! After about 2 whole tanks of diesel with 3/4 of a bottle of blue label standyne and 1/2 a bottle of diesel kleen, and after adjusting the fuel screw, idle, and boost controller it has never been better. Inject...

Re: 1.6td problems
Alright, smoke has been reduced by a noticeable margin, appears to be a lot darker (more so grey than black but at least it's not white anymore)... injectors are officially rebuilt and all pop test great, braking pressure set to spec... also when I pulled the injectors, one of them (assuming from th...

Re: 1.6td problems
See that's the thing though, I bottle fed that pump when I did the diesel purge and it showed no sign of air at all, no bubbles at all... none in the supply and there was virtually none out of the return (I did see a rare bubble or two in the return but nothing concerning). I was told if it starts e...

1.6td problems
Sorry in advance for the long backstory, Car was running great (mk2 1.6td) until a few weeks ago. Typical start off right? Anyway, it all started after I decided to replace my oil pan and gasket (rubber one, highly recommend), valve cover gasket (also rubber, seals beautifully would also recom...
