Re: Mechanical head on hydraulic block, 2.4TD Volvo six

Thanks for the responses. Yep, back to driving Volvos now, but they still have VW diesels under the hood anyway. Best of both worlds. 8) Headgaskets are listed as the same for the two motors. Both are turbo blocks, both have squirters and the oil pumps are the same part #. Can't find anything to acc...

Re: starting 1.6D engine out of car

A handful of dead plugs will keep it from starting and make white smoke while cranking, as others mentioned, but having good plugs that are not turned on before and during cranking will have that effect as well. I second 82vdub's question, did you connect power to the glow plugs? I saw where you sai...

Mechanical head on hydraulic block, 2.4TD Volvo six

Hi all, Haven't posted here in a couple of years since I sold my Rabbit and got involved with diesel Volvos (2.4L VW I-6, a 1.6 with 2 more holes). Nice to see a lot of the same familiar names still around. :D I'm back this time with a question I haven't had any luck finding the answer to so far, an...

Re: 85 Volvo 740 TD parts car for sale

You can probably get it going again if you just flush all the gas out and re-prime with diesel. As long as you didn't run it too long it should be fine, unless I have 6 Volvo TD's... they are getting more and more rare! Would hate to see one go to the wrecking yard when a simple fix is all that is n...

Whoa, what a weird deal. I'm not sure whether to laugh or offer my condolences.

If all that happened was the thing came out of time and trashed the top end, the pistons and rest of the bottom end may still be fine. You might get away with just putting on a new head and seeing what happens.

It has the large drainback hole. The head I have here, which as far as I can tell is a 12mm head (at least a 12mm head bolt fits down the holes...), has a small center drainback hole. Are you sure you don't have it backwards? If not, then what I have here really is an odd pair... the thing that firs...

Thanks for the help. Sounds like it is indeed an early 1.6.

Will a 1.5 head fit on this block? Assuming so, since it's still an 11mm, with only the stroke being changed to make the 1.5 a 1.6...

What is this engine sitting in my basement??

Several years back, I picked up a spare short block to have around. Plan was to eventually rebuild it then have it ready to drop in if my '81 Rabbit's motor ever started getting weak. Well, plans change. I sold the Rabbit last month, with its motor still rock solid since I re-ringed it 20k ag...

How-To: adapt a Volvo 240 leather shift boot into a Rabbit

For the longest time, the biggest blemish in my car's interior was the shifter boot. The tan vinyl boot was an ugly design to begin with, and after 25 years it was dirty and ripped, making it even uglier. Most of them I see in Rabbits are like that, and the colors (red, black, or gray) are just horr...

94 GMC DIESEL Van, Colorado, runs great. $1200 need it gone!

Hoping someone will help me out and take this thing off my hands. Just drove it here from Boston, moving all my stuff out to Colorado. Now it's done its job and I really need it gone by Tuesday because I need the cash. I've got about $1700 in it in the last 6 months, but I'll take $1200 or any other...

1994 GMC Vandura diesel, Colorado, $2200

I am driving my '94 GMC van to Colorado and will be selling it once I get there. The 2000 mile trip from Boston will be the ultimate test! Once it does that trip with no trouble, you'll know it's a good one. 8) It's a 3500 one-ton, white, cargo van. 6.5L V8 diesel engine, non-turbo. Runs great, driv...

1.6TD. No issues with the crank pulley, able to rev higher, easier to find parts, cheaper, and bolts in with no modifications. People have gotten 1.6TDs to make huge amounts of power. Both will last forever if taken care of, but the 1.9 has the crank pulley thing and if that isn't upgraded it can wo...

Yep, common. And if you are able to see the fuel lever moving only half way, you know the pump levers are OK -- the problem lies in the cable mechanism, at one end or the other. Check where it hooks in at the top of the accelerator pedal, as mentioned before, and check that something hasn't come off...

I run Chevron Delo 400 (can get the big gallon jugs of it cheap at costco) and change it every 7-8k. Thinking about switching to synthetic on the next change and running it to 20-30k and seeing what happens. I know people with Volvo diesels and TDIs that change their oil around 25k with excellent re...
