The newer VW diesels (like my '98 Beetle) have 3 glow plugs in the coolant attached to the output of the head to help heat the interior when it's cold and I'm pretty sure they can run quite a long time, so you could possibly use those for a 12 volt system. If you were to use an inverter to power the...

I've used a device which sucks air from the coolant reservoir and bubbles it through a solution which changes color in the presence of hydrocarbons from combustion leaks in a gas engine, maybe it would work on a diesel too. Here is a link to a military manual describing the procedure: http://www.tpu...

I didn't get a chance to do the brake lines this past weekend as I couldn't get the lines to flare; brought the parts to a machine shop yesterday and they did it for $10. I found a bunch of rust on the seam between the front floor pan and the rear deck where the rear passenger line runs along, so I'...

Yes a Craftsman 12point 27MM deepwell is what I use too (44449 is engraved on it, maybe the part number?), came for free with the Rabbit. I have removed a bunch of injectors from my car and junk yard ones and have not broke a barb yet.Monomer wrote:27MM

You can run vegetable oil in these engines but you really need to install a second heated fuel system if you are going to do it reliably for the long term. Some people use kerosene or number 1 diesel to thin out the vegetable oil and throw it in the main tank, though I don't know at what percentages...

I'm putting the brake line system back together this weekend, just wondering if anybody knows of an anti-seize fluid or paste that is safe for brake system components. I've been using Permatex anti-seize on pretty much all of the bolts I've removed and replaced on the car so far, but it does not say...

I hope you get it done in time, I would like to see how you end up routing the lines through the rocker panel. I've taken the vegetable oil system out of my car for the restore, but when I put it back in I would love to have the lines concealed like that, passengers were a little uncomfortable havin...

Jason, I don't know the sizes or part numbers for any of the fittings. I've always brought in an old line for them to size up. I was able to get metric lines from Advance Auto Parts when my rear lines went out. I guess either my parts store doesn't carry metric, or I've just been blind each time I'...

Rear brake line replacement
Hi everybody, I recently removed the fuel tank on my Rabbit so I could get out all of the sludge that had accumulated over the years of driving and the past few of sitting in my garage (don't store your car with fuel in the tank, I got at least a 1 quart of nasty sludge out!). To drop the tank it is...

I would guess that if your suggesting generating hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis while your driving that you will not see any improvement in economy, possibly a reduction. Every time energy is converted to a different form there is a loss due to inefficiencies in the conversion process, this is...

Accelerator cable connection
Is there a trick to getting the accelerator cable connected to the pedal? There is a white bushing on the pedal arm and a mushroomed end on the accelerator cable that will not go in. It seems simple enough but I cannot get it in.
Thanks,
Jason

Jason, one of the other visitors to this site, converted his VW from auto trans to manual. He said the starter is on the back side, spins opposite direction from the manual trans starters, and the steering rack was different as well. Just in case someone was thinking on doing a conversion. The auto...
