Thanks. I am assuming it is the head gasket for the following reason: As soon as I start her up, pressure starts to build in the overflow reservoir. In fact, if I remove the cap, a cloud of steam comes out. This is only seconds after I start her (after she has been sitting for days). I am coming to ...

Bob, this is the kind of advice I was looking for. I agree, 174 is nothing. The body has no rust, and structurally everything is quite sound. I am going to assume that the head will need only to be milled, hopefully not replaced because of a crack. I'd invest in a reman head if necessary. The gasket...

Head gasket blown; options

I started developing steam out the tailpipe the other day; noticed a loss of coolant in the overflow bottle. No oil in the coolant, however. Car has 174k miles, gets 51 mpg, runs warm, good acceleration, no hesitation, but I obviously have a big problem. Because of my real life demands (work, kids, ...

Intake snorkel; oil pan washer size

I'd like to hook up a new intake snorkel but don't want to buy a new one. What do folks use, if anything? I have the part that affixes to the inside of the passenger side fender. I just need some sort of flexible plastic tubing. (I saw what VWCaddy has, and I'd do the same thing, except I have an A/...

I thought the pressure cap served as the release valve, as it were, thereby rendering the system not 100% closed.

Thanks, that is an excellent point. All hoses are new, as is the radiator and tstat. Temp gauge needle will often move to the right of the indicator light at center, then slowly come back to about the middle of the gauge. I wonder if a pressure cap with a lower psi rating would let the car run sligh...

Pressure cap specs

In the course of diagnosing my cooling system issues, I bought a new pressure cap for the coolant reservoir bottle. The original cap was rated 14 psi; the new cap is rated 20 psi. I checked the Bentley, and it says that the pressure cap relief valve should open between 1.2 bar and 1.5 bar. For refer...

coolant bottle cap

I bought a new cap, was about 7 bucks at Pep Boys.

Here is a site that sells the cap for under 3 dollars:

conclusion....

Well, I took her for her first long sustained drive (35 miles non stop more or less) this morning. New radiator, new tstat, new thermoswitch. Hoses all ok. Coolant flowing out of overflow hose into coolant bottle. Temp gauge needle hovered just to the right of the little indicator light for most of ...

Well, got my new radiator in (took about an hour, I was highly motivated). Had to take the electric fan assembly off the old one while it was still in the engine compartment, as I could not remove the entire package without removing the a/c lines from the compressor. So I got her all back together, ...

Thanks, I am going to put the new radiator in the next day or two. I remember replacing the radiator in my F250 several years ago. The old one must have weighed 35 pounds. The new one was ligh as a feather by comparison. Anything special I need to look out for during the replacement? I have a/c and ...
