I "heard" you could be charged for using a non-EPA approved fuel. I don't live in the US so I don't know if this is true. Diesels are more likely to have their fuel tanks dipped than gassers since coloured diesel is readily available. Coloured gasoline is pretty rare.

The adapter shown isn't the one Jack sells just in case you are curious. I think the thread on Jacks adapter is 3 mm x 1.0 but I'll have to check for sure. I bought a different guage locally and it fit perfectly...I had hopes of finding a metric one so I didn't get Jack's guage with the adapter. Met...

Maybe you could park the van up against something so the back door can't be opened? If not I'd think about getting a cheap motion sensing webcam to record whatever is going on out there at night.

That's pretty sad.

I would take it apart and bring it to a starter rebuild shop. They'll be able to tell you if it is junk or if they have the parts you need. Starter parts are quite inexpensive too.

Apparently the TDI engine was designed partly with an oil evacuator in mind. You can use a "mightvac" or "topsider" to suck the oil out of the dipstick tube and oil filter area (cartridge style oil filters). I don't know the specifics but hopefully a netsearch can help you guys o...

Did you run low on oil at some point during the trip? You should be able to stretch the oil out to well over 10,000 miles. Especially if you've been changing it more frequently before the extended run. I've seen people running 15,000 miles on synthetic but it helps to change the oil filter half way ...

If your budget is limited don't follow this link. ;) They'll make whatever you want according to the site. You should try to find some references before pre-paying for the work. I think you're looking at 20K for a fully rebuilt 4x4 with SVO. I wonder how many bears you'll attract with all that oil??...

It could be the solenoid wire or IP solenoid. Find an assistant walking past your place and have them turn the key off and on while you listen to the pump. Also try powering your old IP to see if it makes a noise at all...I believe I read that they do.

Good luck, Steve

I was just walking past my 1.9TD and decided to measure the notch in the cam shaft...it's 4.4 mm. My door hinge that I found in the back room is sort of a wedge shape when closed and fits in far enough to be useful. All of the other tricks for the 1.6s timing also work on the 1.9D/TD although some h...

That is normal for most of the 1.6s so no need to worry. I'd answer your other question but I have no idea where the fuel tank is on your rig. If it has one it will be directly after the water seperator which is attached to the tank. If your engine bay has any clear lines keep an eye on them as you'...

You can get dash type ammeters from Canadian Tire for about 6 bucks. I mounted one under the hood of my car so that it lights up and measures current at the same time (put in line after the fuse). I'm not fast enough to jump out of the car to see the peak draw but 50 - 60 amps is about normal for th...

The power steering pump is the tensioner on my car. It worked way better than the frustrating alternator belt system but I removed it after I blew up the steering pump. The alternator belt also turns the waterpump through double pulleys on my car. I don't have the redundancy of two belts anymore so ...

Here's a post on putting in a 1.9TD and changing the Ring/Pinion gears of the tranmission. He gives RPM/speed values, mileage, etc. I guess 78 MPH @ 4000 RPM is okay for a VW but my Ford E150 would dust you guys all the way to the nearest gas station. :P http://cs-www.cs.yale.edu/homes/jag/vw/engine...
