Topic: Block heaters for TDI's?

TDI engines do not have freeze plugs, so you can't use the old Rabbit type heater. Dipstick heaters are useless. Don't waste your money on one. You can pay $100+ for a Frostheater, or you could buy a kit from NAPA or a similar store for $50, a few feet of 5/8" heater hose, and a few hose clamps.

Since disconnecting the MAF did no good, it's probably OK. Start with the basics: fuel filter, air filter, and use VagCom to check the timing. Have you checked the degree of intake clogging? The slow cranking could be caused by several things: weak battery, weak starter, dirty battery terminals, dir...

Whoever gave you this advice doesn't know what he's talking about.

Your '04 doesn't have a wastegate, and you should be able to hear the turbo whistle when accelerating/cruising.

Why did you want to adjust the internal pump pressure? The IP has a pressure relief valve, aka Case Pressure Relief Valve. Plus, any excess fuel is sent back to the tank.

Were you having problems of some sort?

It sounds like this car is an ALH as opposed to a PD-BEW. PDs have an intake lift pump which will prime the fuel system after a filter change.

Since you know about these cars maybe you could answer this question. The other day I sprayed a very small amount of brakeClean into the intake at the EGR, and after a few seconds I noticed a white fog coming from the exhaust. I had thought I messed something up even though I didn't hear any strang...

Do yourself and you're customer a favor and get a Bentley repair manual. Do you have the proper and necessary tools for changing a tdi timing belt? the mark & pray method is a really bad idea on these cars. Change the water pump, all 3 rollers, and the tensioner. Complete kits are available from...

Something definitely isn't right. Most people go at least 100k before needing new GPs, and even then, they don't all burn out at the same time. If you have access to VAGCOM, you can use it to see how long the GPs are staying on, I forget which block it's in. Also, try cleaning the contacts on the ha...

the alh has the glow in the coolant passage by the head ,right? The cylinder plugs glow after start up too?Thats seems excessive. ALH engines have GPs in the head just like any other VW Diesel. They will stay on after start up to help cut down emissions. ALH cars with a manual transmission have 3 gl...

Over approximately 45*F the GPs on a TDI do not come on. The light only comes on as test to indicate the light is working.

Have you tested the GPs for the proper resistence? Maybe the harness is bad. It is a weak item on the early A4 cars.

Using a test light won't tell you if a plug is marginal. You need to use an ohmmeter to really check them. If one is shorted to ground, a test light will light up. The harness is very susceptible to corrosion. Try cleaning the contacts inside each of the plugs on the buss bar and the electrodes on o...
