Re: transmission drain plug HF magnet

I guess this is the proper way to mount the magnets. But, they are SO powerful, so why not just stick one to the drain plug for the tranny or oil drains? I put about four of them on the oil drain plug so that I can still get my wrench over it and remove it without losing the metal that it picks up. ...

Re: Glow Plug Re-Wiring

Yeah, the more electrical connections, the more chance of corrosion, high resistance. Electrical gadgets frequently fail at connections. With easy, separate access to each glow plug one fuse should suffice. I'm still in the conception stage, but I envision running 4 flex silicone wires to a large 80...

Re: Glow Plug Re-Wiring

I'm going to use alligator clips and 10AWG on all four. Although I might go for a nut on #4. The "pain in the arse nuts" are gone. The clips (for my model) are easily moved on and off with a set of long needle nose and hold quite firmly. I will run the 4 wires through a 4 way fuse block wi...

Effect Of A Too Thick Head Gasket??

Re: 1.6 Non-Turbo Diesel Does anyone have an idea of how much putting the wrong size (too thick) head gasket in place would effect the compression? Some commentary has suggested that a hasty mechanic could do that to expedite the job. For this hypothetical, let's say that the correct size would be t...

Re: API SN Oil in a Diesel Engine??

I spoke to Mobil rep. They say the Mobil 1 15W-50 meets API CF(diesel) specs, although it is not listed on the container. Scroll down on this page: "According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 15W-50 is of the following quality level: API CF" https://www.mobil.com/english-us/passenger-vehicle-lube/pd...

Re: Manually Adjustable Clutch Cable Substitution

Now that I've fiddled with the automatic cable and learned how to reset it, I think I'll stick with it. I'm only concerned that the nylon at the pedal end will wear through. I'll have to take a look at that. Auto is about $50, manual about $15.......so if it breaks, or is about to, I will go manual.

Manually Adjustable Clutch Cable Substitution

Can I replace the self-adjusting clutch cable with a manually adjustable version??

My Bentley's manual(VG92) talks about both, but states "The two cables are not interchangable."

What say the gurus?????

Re: New Thermostat/Temperature Question

Thanks, TylerDurden. "Spitting" was just a figure a speech. It is running pretty steady. Good the hear the MK2 will self purge. At 75F ambient and a run of about 8 miles, the gauge reads about 3/4. After idling in my driveway for about a minute, the fan comes on and runs for a short time. ...

Re: N/A 1.6. Sucking air from tank?

After a lot of fussing around, I changed my fuel filter and that solved it for me.
It took a lot of work to get that checkvalve out and I drew vacuum on the lines, with and without the filter, etc.

Try replacing the filter first. If that doesn't work, dive in !!!!

New Thermostat/Temperature Question

This is the first time that I have personally replaced the coolant and thermostat on my 1991 MK2 NA diesel. Temps here in Vancouver, WA are in the 90s. Will replacing an 80C thermostat with an 87C unit cause the engine to run hotter after it has warmed up to operating temp?? I understand that the 87...

API SN Oil in a Diesel Engine??

I got a couple of free gallons of Mobile One full synthetic 15W-50 oil from a friend.
It says it's for API Service SN, not a diesel designation.
It would make a great summer oil. Can I use it in my daily driver 1.6 NA engine.
Normally I run Chevron Delo 400 15-W-40.

Comments please.

Lithium jump Starter

Will these lithium jump starters work on our small diesel engines?? Or will the 50 or so amps of glow plug draw, maybe 2 or 3 times, suck most of the charge out of it and make it impossible to draw the heavy current for starting?? Say one rated at 12000mah.

Comments??

Re: electrical issue

I hope this video might help with your ground issues. Although you have probably gotten past this issue, this is still good information for cleaning up your engine bay grounds and checking out your alternator. Good luck with your work !! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11jbHS4XXXY&feature=youtu....
