Re: Newbie to the Van!

I'm back and with some bad news... She won't start! After setting the timing she would be hard to start but always fired up. As the days got a little colder she was harder to start and now its in the low 40s and she won't start at all. I was never able to track down a dial gauge to time the pump, bu...

Re: aaz swap in vanagon coolant hose question

I'm no pro but I have been working on 1.6 TD in an 82 vanagon. The hose kit from the aaz probably won't work for the swap. With the engine mounted at an angle it takes a couple of custom hoses- the one that leads to the expansion tank for sure will need to be a new hose. I think if you call a van pl...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

I've read that a few times... I'll swap it out when I flush the system; also probably put the drain hole some one posted on here (think it was Fatmobile) Question is how soon should I flush the system. I'd like to invest in some other issues but I don't want to fry my water pump...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Ya the PO said the cap on the old tank was holding too much pressure which lead to the new head and gasket I inherited. The therm is new I believe... I'll check how it looks. My boost gauge, tach and odometer don't seem to be working... Good news is the tack says it's for a diesel and I think I have...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

I'm pretty sure it's the right mark. Looks like a v shaped notch and the engine is running great! Just got back from about a 30 min drive. Went like this... She ran great after the timing alignment; only issue was the metal sound. Turns out to be the cam sprocket and the metal trim rubbing. Flexing ...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Must have been that mark; it did look like a <> notch in the flywheel, I just wasn't expecting the tabs to be beside it. Got it all put together and turned it by hand at least 3 times (didn't want valves hitting cylinders). Cranked it and she started right up. Still have a soft metal sound but I thi...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Ok got it all lined up like that. The <> I guess are the tabs I was looking at. Just thought they would be harder to find and I could see the bently pic well enough to know.
About to button it all back up.
Thanks a ton!!

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Ok before I loosen anything I have a question.

Looking for the tdc mark on the flywheel.
I see two tabs and between the tabs is a notch. That novh lines up close when cam is set. The ip is about 30deg off.

Am I looking at the right mark? Could it all be that off after swapping the belt?

Thanks.

Re: Newbie to the Van!

I do have clear line on the return; highest point, etc... Looks good there are some tinny bubbles but nothing scary.

Think it could just be air?

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Ok so I'll check flywheel, cam, and IP for alignment. Theoredically the mark I made before the belt was replaced should be the correct angle to mount the pump. So I start there and then try to tune by ear?? Or track down a gauge.

Thanks!!

Re: Newbie to the Van!

If I find the cam and crank are off and move the belt won't I need to re time the pump?

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Well drove it around the block and down to the gas station to put some air in the tires! She over heated on the way back; LED blinking and temp gauge at top. When I got home I saw the expantion tank empty so I filled it and seemed to be better but I couldn't run it long enough to check. The engine s...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Well no luck with the gasket but an old piece of vac hose ripped down seems to be working now. As for the timing; I've advanced it past my mark and I think I'm running out of room to rotate it... Engine still sounds like it's got marbles and will only run with cold start out half way. sounds like it...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Not terribly loud, just sounds off; kind of like a galloping horse... Do you think I need to check the flywheel and cam settings? I was thinking since the belts matched- all marks lined up perfectly, it would still be aligned. Also do you think I could just use a folded shop towl (paper) as a makesh...
