Re: No Start 1990 Jetta 1.6 Diesel

Go to the parts store and get two cans of diesel purge.

Bottle feed the IP with straight diesel purge.

You must put the return line in the feed bottle, so it recirculates the diesel purge rather than sending back to the tank.
A little inline fuel filter is on the input line is a good thing too.

Re: What Is a Caddy??

Also don't confuse it with "CaBBy"
On some online VW forums, people refer to cabriolets (convertibles) as "Cabbies".

You wont find much use of that here though, as the cabriolet was never fitted with a diesel engine from the factory.

Re: All rear lights suddenly out

Yes I know of the "old trick", and that is why I mentioned that the cop was honest in this case. He didnt ask to search or even look in the back seat. I know that my lights were out last night, and as I said, it has happened before (lights randomly going out, never been stopped for it befo...

Re: All rear lights suddenly out

The front markers were working the entire time, only the rear lights went out.

Good idea on the indicator light.

All rear lights suddenly out

1991 jetta Was driving home last night, cop pulls me over for no tail lights. I got a ticket that can be voided if I fix it. He said I had no tail lights, no license plate light, nothing. Brake lights were working as well as turn signals/hazards. Well I drove a few miles further toward home, pulled ...

Re: Torque Wrench

Get one. Its a good investment, especially if you dont have a good feel for torque yet. One thing about VW's is that you often have steel bolts in aluminum holes. Over torquing can tear out an aluminum thread real quick. Diesels also vibrate a lot, and an under-torqued bolt can easily become a missi...

Re: 1.6l from 81' rabbit pickup

...not really sure what your question is: The only transmissions that will bolt up to it without an adapter plate is a VW. The only VW in the U.S. that was rear wheel drive (and rear mounted engine) that originally had that engine was the diesel vanagon. If you are looking to put that engine in anot...

What does the exhaust look like?
If it isn't leaking, its burning, and if its burning that much you should see it in the exhaust.

Re: MK2 dip stick and tube on my MK1

Mk2 dipsticks are more convenient, but also more prone to leaks.
How about soldering a coat hanger or welding rod to the existing dipstick to extend it?

Re: Starting problem, (NOT a glow problem)

Well, I would love to do the pop test, but where I work, this stuff is so obsolete we dont have the equipment anymore That's a weird statement to me as the VE pump was used on VW, Mercedes, Cummins, maybe others for about 20 years. If you have a pop tester at all, just use one of your fuel lines to...

Re: Starting problem, (NOT a glow problem)

Put a clear fuel line on the input and output of the pump so you can see if there is air trapped in there. Do a compression test. Both air and low compression could cause the symptoms you describe. Also, since you're a pro you should be able to take your injectors to work and pop test them, clean, a...

Re: Activating glow plug light in the cluster

The purpose of the solenoid is to increase the juice to the glow plugs for better starts and to keep all the high current out of the cab to avoid a fire. Oh that makes more sense. Your question was how to make the dash light work, so I was confused. You could still use the bosch type in the way I s...

Re: Activating glow plug light in the cluster

Get yourself a "bosch type" relay instead of the big ugly solenoid. They cost about $3, will fit under the dash, and look like they actually belong on the car. If you are concerned about future owners, it wont look like a hack job. Any auto parts store will have them Use the glow plug wire...
