replacing 2nd gear synchro

Anyone done it?
How difficult is it, any specialty tools needed?
What seals or other parts should be replaced?

1991 sticky ignition/accessory switch

The ignition switch on my jetta is wired such that when you put the key in, the radio comes on (dont have to turn the key to acc. position). The problem is that sometimes when I remove the key, the radio stays on. I have to put the key in and out a bunch of times, wiggle it, etc. to turn off the rad...

Re: Keyed power source (for stereo, gauge bulbs, etc)

Probably the easiest keyed circuit is the fuel shut off solenoid. It might be wise to put in a relay and draw straight from the battery, fused of course.

Re: Rough idle and Injector testing

Yes, the cold start lever also made me think it was a timing issue. I set the pump timing not that long ago. I think I even advanced it a bit. Maybe I will check it again to be sure it hasn't moved.

Re: Rough idle and Injector testing

I would say the #1 injector is the only one working correctly, and removing another injector (cracking the lines open) creates a situation where you are running good on only one cylinder and barely on others, so it dies. I started thinking the same thing for short time, but then realized the logic ...

Re: Rough idle and Injector testing

I put a clear hose on the pump return line today, no bubbles during the minute or so of rough idle. Here is the history of the car: 1991 N/A with 300k Original engine started/drove good, but excessive blowby forced me to retire that engine (occasional run away at high rpm, and oil coming out the dip...

Re: Rough idle and Injector testing

Injectors have new nozzles
Compression 400-440-375-450

I dont have a clear line on the IP output, I should try that just to be sure, but I would think the squeezing the primer bulb a bunch of times before starting would take care of that, as it pushes fuel out of the pump when I squeeze it.

Rough idle and Injector testing

First off, the car runs great when warm. What Im trying to chase down is a rough idle that happens when I first start up in the morning. I suspected a faulty injector because it sounds as though it is running on 3 cylinders. It runs rough for a few seconds, then it sounds like the fourth cylinder ki...

Re: two cars side by side swapping engines... busted cam end

Timing marks: Even with a lock pin in the injector pump, the flywheel mark can be off a little because there is still a few degrees of rotation possible. When you go to put the belt on the first time, note which way the engine rotates as you do it. Then you can start over with the mark slightly off ...

Re: two cars side by side swapping engines...

you definitely talked me into doing more work. gonna get new oil cooler hoses and front and rear main seals and carrier gaskets and intermediate shaft seal. 100bucks on little various parts that could leave you stranded is a no brainer. Also you might consider replacing the little coolant hose belo...

Re: strange wear pattern on rear tire

yes I was going to look into the bushings next. If they arent obviously wasted, is there any way to test them? There is nothing in bentley about it, just how to replace. I guess I could just jack the car up and check for play, but Id probably have to remove the shock again to do a meaningful test. I...

strange wear pattern on rear tire

I just replaced my rear springs and shocks, due to a broken spring on the passenger side. While the tire was off, I noticed that the Driver's side tire had a strange undulating wear pattern on the inside edge. The only way I can describe is if you run your hand over the inside edge of the tire, it g...

Re: two cars side by side swapping engines...

I dont think the exhaust pipes will match up, and you will need to use the turbo downpipe. It is highly unlikely you will get it done in a day. Maybe if you had a full shop with a lift, every possible tool you need, etc. But for a home shop mechanic with adequate tools, its not gonna happen. Given th...

Re: Wanted to borrow: Pop tester in Hudson Valley NY

I decided to build my own.
Total cost was <$100. I did a write up in the "List your homemade tools" thread in case anyone wants to build their own.

Re: List Your Homemade VW Specialty Tools Here!!!!!!!!

Well I built an injector pop tester today. I put together this parts list so if anyone wants to do it they can easily. Total cost was just under $100. There are many DIY pop testers out there, but most are made from bottle jacks and require modifying the jack by fully disassembling and welding. Alth...
