Re: '79 Rabbit Tires - How Big?
I guess what are you going for? Looks and width or tallness and function? Also what rim size? My favorite ride of the 13s and 14's combined is the 175/70r13 I haven't ran any wider than the 185/60r14, which is another stock size. I have heard of others running up to 195/55r15, but having rubbing iss...

Re: Vacuum Pump Problem
I never had one personally, but an online friend did...there are 2 different length gears on some of the older diaphram vac pumps. One guy put one in and had 0 oil pressure, another went the other way and had troubles. From what I here is it fairly simple to see, just make sure the outside and insid...

Re: ABL diesel diagnosis question
I would replace the rings if you already have it apart inspecting everything, at the least. Unless you like pulling this engine, taking the head off, and doing more work later. If it was in a quantum or something you could get to it all better maybe that would work, but it sounds like it is a hassle...

Re: ABL diesel diagnosis question
To do this properly, you should have the crank inspected to find out how worn it is and whether just a polish of the journals is in order or if they need to be turned and use different size bearings. The cam bearings are likely worn and these are a common source of low oil pressure. Since you have ...

Re: Wheel bearings
had poor luck with both, but worse with the pex and rear wheel bearings. I go Timkin and never an issue since. Replaced both pex and fag under 40,000 miles.

Re: 1.6 head 107a pump misc
Getting closer to having the coin. Just wondering, do the precups measure 30mm or 32mm from what you can see on the head? Also are the precups completely flat or do they have a check intent in them? I will hopefully let you know soon.

I take it 225 was too little? I am interested in what you would take for the head as I am weighing my options now.

Re: WTB: Rabbit/Jetta diesel non-A/C alternator bracket
I sorted mine by making a spacer for the alt to shim the pulley to where it was close to perfect. Also, if you still have the old bracket you could weld in some flat stock and repair it to work better than it was.

Re: Head rebuild part?
The best way to remove and install injectors is by rotating the wratchet and socket around the vertical axis of the injector (holding the extension and rotating the wrench). Most people just pull on the rachet handle, exerting a side force off the vertical axis along the injector line. That's what ...

Re: Head rebuild part?
pulled or pushed, but the beam of the torque wrench has to be going to the head not away from it. If you think about it you should figure it out. Just be easy on the part that has very little meat on it.

Re: Head rebuild part?
Since you didn't know what they were you probably don't know that you have to torque them to 51ft/lbs and to tighten toward the head, not away. If you do this incorrectly it will break the boss on the front side of the head. Do not keep tightening until the head breaks.

Re: 1.6 head 107a pump misc
Is the said head mechanical or hydro, I am assuming it is mech since you said shimmed recently? If it is mech what kind of mileage is on it? I would love to see a pic. If it is everything I want, I would let you keep the valves and shims if you wanted them, and offer 225.00 shipped. I won't use the ...

Re: Rough running when engine cold
It is a diesel. Everyone I have ever owned didn't run smooth when cold. I think that is why they came with glowplugs, since cold starting is a problem without them. I never studied it close but my old build would smoke even in the summer if I didn't have it warm when it first started. It would also ...
