Re: Exhaust Ring Gasket
For best sealing results run a bead of Permatex Ultra Copper hi-temp gasket sealer around the perimeter of both sealing surfaces.. your ears (and nose) will thank you later.

Re: Head/head gasket advise
It will run fine at 1.02.... better than at 0.97 most likely... so unfortunately your troubles are probably elsewhere.
Did you take any special steps to prime the injection pump? If not, a little bit a of search will show you 2-3 ways to do this...often it helps with that first start.

And insulate the wires really really well... some folks just wrap a couple turns of electrical tape around 'em and call it done. The water/mud/salt soon get in and back comes the flashing LED.

Sounds like your original glow plug relay is DOA... buzzing is one symptom that it's about to give up the ghost... and the odds of you having 6 bad sensors in a row is...

No worries...just made it a little tricky to figure out the context.
I'm with you... many shops will simply exchange knuckles... very little down time, no sweating with big vices etc.

My awesome powers of interweb deduction make me suspect we're talking about front wheel bearings here... I just don't know why.

Re: Machine Shop Horror
Yup, no way to do this with just a feeler gauge and micrometer unfortunately...to accurately check the work the pistons need to come out. You would then measure the piston skirts at their widest part with a large bore micrometer and the bores of the cylinders at multiple sites with a set of bore gau...

Re: Cam gear puller: USE JACKS!!!!!!
Came across this thread looking for information on the cam shaft locking tool used for setting up the cam timing. I have the original VW diesel tools for the 1.6 NA engine, but was trying to find out if the cam tool I have will work with the later ALH TDI engine as well? This is the flat bar that h...

Re: nichrome wire gauge for block warmer
Yup... your plan is certainly inventive... but I'd suggest difficult to do safely. You'd have to get the length of wire just right... too short and it will overheat and burn out, too long and it won't heat enough. If any of it ever touches the engine there's a very high risk of electrical shock and/...

Re: my 91 has a clock not a tach.
I don't see why there should be a difference between gasser tach and diesel tach if they work off a electric signal from alternator?? Ah but they don't... the gasser tach gets its signal from the ignition system whereas the diesel tach gets its signal from the alternator... at about 6X the rate. Da...

Re: '85 NA Timing and Smoking problems
I'd say go at this the opposite way... get the flywheel to TDC and then make everything *else* line up.
That means you need to loosen both the IP and the cam sprocket... as per the Bentley.

Re: Prepping for re-ring job
FWIW... I've got both and have used both a couple times each..and in my (limited) experience I'd agree with what seems to be generally written... the beaded hone seemed "gentler" and slower to remove metal, whereas the 3-stone version seemed more agressive and therefore better at removing ...
