It doesnt really compare with some of the previous events: I bought my Jetta about 4-5 hours from home. I found it on ebay but negotiated the sale in person as ebay removed the auction as the posting openly stated offers could be made by email. The car was located near my godparents so I went for a ...

When you say 2in cylinder on a 5in cylinder what is the 5in cylinder? When I had the head off on my Jetta (which is equipped with a slushbox) I recall seing what I thought at the time was the starter. I was a bit annoyed because the car came with another starter (probably junk like all the other par...

I bought it at the local, and very small, vw dealer. It was even something they had on hand. I dont recall it being that expensive but they only sell it by the meter so I have enough to replace all the lines three times over.

Sounds like a blown head gasket (100% description). Easy way to check this is to disconnect the wire that runs to the injection pump solenoid ( at the area of the pump where the lines that run to the injectors connect), crank over the engine for a short period of time, and then crack open the cap fo...

From the looks of your other post this probably doesnt matter but I think I know why you could only get to .86mm. I found that my locking pin for the pump sprocket does not hold the pump right at TDC. I had the exact same problem. I could see/feel the pump fall (slightly) from TDC so I ground a piec...

I just tried to check, there is a hose that looks something like that but it wraps under the oil cooler so I cant see most of it. It is quite dark and cold though so Ill check back tomorrow and if someone has not confirmed it I will.

That is too cool. You would think there would be some serious handling issues although I suppose you would just let off the accelerator for the trailer before making any turns. Im surprised its not a diesel but then again if it started to runaway...

My condolences for all your troubles. Makes me look at my own car in a whole different light (im currently staring out the window into her beautiful headlights lost in their magnificence).

On a more serious note you need glowplugs to check compression.

I was also wondering about those emblems. They are also present on the fenders of my 86 Jetta. I kind of guessed since it looks like a wolf but this confirms it. Off to wikipedia to look into this.

That is a very common leak location. When I bought my Jetta last summer it had a leak at that location. The PO had a pump from a scrapped car put on and it started to leak at the same location within a month. I replaced the required seal on the original and have not had any problems. It would probab...

Ive got the automatic in an 86 Jetta. I dont know what kind of mileage I get but I drive to and from school, across the city, at least 6 times a week. I spend $15 - $25 on fuel each week (I was going two weeks on $30 worth in the summer). My speedo and odometer are quite a bit off otherwise I would ...

I made the proposal (to a teacher) of using a sterling type heat engine running off the exhaust for some sort of artificial aspiration. He said he doubted it would respond to engine rpm quick enough. He did not throw the idea out though. He just figured some other kind of load would have to be put o...
