Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries

When you turn the key on, does the battery light come on until you start the engine? I believe this light is responsible for exciting the fields in the alternator, and is controlled by a single wire.

Re: Blower motor wiring

Well, you have power to the switch for the blower, so thats good. Do you have a spare switch?

Re: Blower motor wiring

Usually when the resistor goes bad you get only high speed. Since you have nothing, I would say check the fuse, if you haven't already. Other than that, thats strange.

Re: old turbo engines w/o extra oil port?

As long as the block and head are true turbo heads, yes. The turbo heads used a sodium injected alloy and better valves to deal with the added heat from the turbo. I don't know if CY is turbo off the top of my head. You should be able to find out.

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Is there any difference in noise with the cold start lever pulled out?

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Well, that'd be nice. Its probably a non issue at this point, but did you try cracking all 4 fuel unions on the injectors and make sure fuel was coming out of each union?

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Well, the air could've been caused by something interal to the pump coming apart too. Its just strange because usually everything has to be in sync and working to make it run but I suppose my theory might be plausible based on the fact it has no power, and you noticed the air only post-trauamatic in...

Is your motor solid lifter or hydaulic? Has the valve lash been checked?

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

I've never heard air in an injection pump make noise like that. I can't say that it wouldn't, but I've had air in injection pumps before and the engine noise didn't really change. Your engine is very very loud, The injection pump has over a thousand parts in it, lots of moving ones too. My guess wou...

Re: 1980 Diesel Pickup eating batteries

The glow plug relay does not shut off after the light goes out. It normally shuts off after the engine starts. The light is just an indicator to tell you, "OK, you can start me now". You should hear it click off after the engine is running. Best way to determine if its sticking on is to wi...

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Depends on how hard you run the engine when you are running the diesel purge through it. With the noise its making now, it may be far too deafening to run it at high rpm, but yeah, it'll take a while to run it through but you should vary the RPM somewhat to get the full cleaning effect.

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Yeah fill up a mason jar or something similar with straight diesel purge, plumb inlet line and return line into bottle and run it and see what happens. It takes a while to run an entire can through the engine. These engines do not burn much fuel at all. :)

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

The injection pump being rebuilt by the PO worries me. A lot of "experts" have rebuilt them only to find out they're f'd up inside (pardon my french) I wonder if something with the advance mechanism is screwed up. Bottle test is fairly easy. You can use pretty much anything you can find a ...

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Cam to crank issues = timing. I'm having hard time wrapping my head around the events and how they transpired. You said when engine was at TDC, cam slot was parallel to head, and cam lobes 1 + 2 pointed at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock yes? TDC mark on flywheel looks like <> only on its side? The first t...

Re: AHHH! Two issues all happened at once!

Ok. When you drain the oil to look for signs of internal damage, cut open your oil filter and look at that too. A lot of crap gets trapped in those. Worth looking anyways.
