Re: How to clean nozzles?
Chiming in here, late in the conversation. About lapping the needle.......is it possible, or worth the trouble, to re-grind the valve body back to flat, or is that going to change the spray badly?

Re: crankshaft bearing question
Can't thank folks enough for the guidance. I might have made a good score from an acquaintance who just replaced his standard bearings (same as mine) after only 3K miles while working on the bottom end. Bearings are mostly ok, at least enough for me to re-use. Been educational.

Re: Speedometer / Odometer Discrepancy
I have a very similar issue with my Jetta. I have a speedometer cluster form Canada that gives the time in Milittary format. For every 10 miles, I have actually gone .9 miles. My speed registers 5 mph slower that how fast I am actually going.

crankshaft bearing question
Firstly, I will request that you not make toooo much fun of this question. I am out of work, need my car, and am trying not to make any mistakes on its' repair. While removing a piston I touched the rod bearing with metal, leaving marks. Not really knowing if it could be re-used, I took one from ano...

Re: cracked prechambers
Thanks. The low pressure might explain the white build-up on the prechamber outlet.

Re: cracked prechambers
Thank you very much.
Had a weird discovery while cleaning the injectors. Three of them are 115 bar and one is 130 bar. Don't know why I didn't catch that before now. Sheesh. So is 130 the way to go, or should I go for 145? The motor is a 1.6L turbo, hydraulic.

Re: cracked prechambers
Update. I wrote Jack about the cracks, but he said the chambers have not been available for years, so had to use these again. Took my trusty Dremel tool to them to clean out the openings of the chambers nice and shiny, so will see how it goes. Td is now torqued back onto the motor, so just need to f...

cracked prechambers
The motor is a 1.6L turbodiesel with about 100K miles since a rebuild. I could see bubbles coming from the joint between the head and block (on the front of the block), so deduced a blown head gasket. I had been going through a gallon of oil per fill-up, and blue smoke for exhaust. Removing the head...

Re: tranny rumble
Thanks much for all the advice. It looks now like I will be doing much more as the head gasket blew. Sheesh.

Re: 90 Jetta transmission whine
I drained and re-filled my 5 spd the other day with Lucas tranny oil and auto tranny fluid. Sounds good and shifts fine, so far.

tranny rumble
Heard a new noise from my 5 spd the other day. It only happens on compression; when I put power to the motor, the noise goes away. But when coasting down there is a noise like gears rumbling against each other. I drained the oil and it was rather ugly; kind of like a water/oil mix, dirty looking. Th...

Besides the other things one should look at when buying a car, make sure to check out the compression.

Re: losing water mystery
Well, new info; and Fatmobile hit it right smack in the kisser. I had read about a restriction in that small return hose iin an old posting, but had not seen it on my hose............until Friday. That sucker was plugged solid!. Evidently some junk got into my water system and did the dirty deed. I ...

Re: losing water mystery
A little update; while driving today I stopped and checked my radiator hoses and found that even though the car was up to heat on the gauge, the lower radiator hose was stone cold. Ah, ha, says I, the thermostat! So I bought a good German-made thermo and put it in (after checking to be sure it would...

Re: losing water mystery
Thanks. I do not find any, and I mean any, leaks. VWCaddy's suggestion was something I had thought of, and can certainly find plausible. Don't really want to change out a head gasket, but may look anyway. Need to change the timing belt soon anyway.
