Re: 1.6 eco diesel blowing oil from valve cover gasket and vac pump seal

in my experience bad blow by likes to shoot oil out of the dipstick tube (anyone else?). my first thought would be a problem in the new head gasket install.... compression leak into oil channel or blocked oil channel. That being said... i would still replace the oil pump and valve cover seals first ...

Re: Stuck Heatshields

yep, I've got a screw that fits the purpose in its own little spot in my tool box. Its a sheet metal screw with the right thread to get into the hole in the heat shield, and long enough that I can pry the head of the screw. They're usually not stuck too bad... just hard to get any leverage on them

Re: Rabbit truck Stranded in neport news .big trouble

Did you try spinning the Intermediate shaft pulley by hand? I'm wondering if the belt was tight enough but the intermediate shaft wasn't spinning right. There's a little woodruff key in the middle of the pulley. I once installed the pulley with this key seated incorrectly and the pulley got all wobb...

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

I'm not as air focused as some others here. often, I have different ideas while others point to air. That being said, I've got a clear line going from the pump. since this is the end of the line as far as fuel getting to the engine goes, I know at a glance whether I have air problems, and air does c...

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

I don't currently have clear lines
I use material called "tygon" I think, and just leave it in. but regular cheap hardware store stuff is fine for temporary testing

Re: pulling a windshield

Yeah, I've seen such knives in my research. I shockingly passed inspection after converting the floor pans to about 80 percent bondo and sheet metal, so the prospect of driving 2 hours for a windshield I may break is less appealing. If i give it a go, I'll report back

Re: pulling a windshield

ha... I'm trying to get the replacement one off... otherwise I'd be a hammer and foot kind of guy, just cause it sounds fun.

renting a tool is a good idea... I'll look into it... otherwise I'll probably try some hack stuff

pulling a windshield

finally got a five day tag for inspection on the 86 golf. got a fighting chance at pushing it through, but I'm a little stuck on the windshield, which is cracked . getting a new one and paying to have it swapped would about equal the market value of the car . no luck at nearest junkyards. Found a pa...

Re: 1.6td problems

... also, often the timing is set so that the car doesn't want to start with the cold start pulled. both my cars are like that, in which case you use the cold start to crank for a few seconds, then push it in to start while still cranking . it will start (or put in a damn good effort) when you push ...

Re: 1.6td problems

your last post, especially this - when that happens I'll play with it a little bit (phrasing! ) pull it out and push it back in and the idle goes back to normal 950+/- rpm. makes me think that perhaps its as simple as your cold start cable sticking. if your timing is on the advanced side anywa...

Re: Oil Pan Replacement Tricks??

next time I do one i'm replacing those ones near the tranny with allen or phillips heads... do myself a future favor.
I think I held pan in place with a jack at first... also, heavy duty gaskets are available, and are much harder to rip when things get awkward

Re: Vince the Veggie Vdub - 83 Golf

I didn't have a flat plate heat exchanger. thats interesting.. did you have an in line thermometer? I'd be interested to know how hot you were getting the oil just from hose in hose. Vince - processing the waste oil is the messy part. Once its in your car your exhaust just smells like someone's mak...

Re: Vince the Veggie Vdub - 83 Golf

I use the engine antifreeze to heat the entire fuel line from tank to filter, then on to the injection pump.
The fuel line is inside a hose filled with antifreeze.
I had hose in hose too.... just curious, did you not have a flat plate heat exchanger?

Re: Vince the Veggie Vdub - 83 Golf

I think its a great idea to process some oil first. You'll get an idea of what your getting into. as with anything in this arena, there's more than one way. You may want to poke around that site I posted earlier. It all depends on how much money and work you want to invest, and even with that establ...
