Re: Bizarre Vacuum Pump Damage - seizing I-shaft
I'm not sure of any pin, since I don't have other pumps to compare it to. I ordered a used one on ebay which will hopefully solve my problems. I spent more buying one from the seller that had the nipple on the cover plate intact. The seller said that the other pumps (without a nipple) had a little u...

Re: Bizarre Vacuum Pump Damage - seizing I-shaft
The oil pump and vacuum pump both came off my old block. The replacement block is likely newer - it has the two oil drains sticking off the front. When I installed the vacuum pump, it seemed securely mounted in place. It seems like this combination - the oil and vacuum pump from a 1985 block, instal...

Bizarre Vacuum Pump Damage - seizing I-shaft
After reassembling my engine and test driving my car a few times, I noticed the brakes had no vacuum assist. Today, I pulled the vacuum tube and found there was absolutely no vacuum being pulled with the engine at idle. I pulled the cover off and found stuck vanes, plus the top of the rotary assembl...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
I got everything worked out and now cylinder number 4 has 400+ psi compression. Phew! All that doom and gloom for nothin. It's amazing that my car FINALLY starts and idles smooth on the first try. No smoke, no violent shaking. I took it around the block a couple times and it had good pickup and powe...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
I'm considering buying the J tool to compress the valves, and I do have shop air. Then again, I need to replace the oil seal on the cam shaft, so I may just remove the cam altogether and hit two birds with one stone. finding a tight valve is the best news you could have gotten!! go celebrate and who...

Well, It looks like you all might be right. I can't get even the thinnest of feeler gauges to fit between the lifter and cam lobe on the exhaust valve.
As soon as I figure out some way to get that shim out, I'll try a thinner one and see if that helps. I'm guessing it will make all the difference!

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
That's a thought... I did replace the exhaust valve shim for #4, but I never rechecked any of the valves after warming the engine up.
Are these heat shields good for nothing once you take the injectors out? Cuz for warmup purposes I might be reusing the ones in there.
*keeping fingers crossed*

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
A tragic end. Finally got back to this project, with a little bit of dread and trepidation. First thing I did was I tried to advance the timing by hand, but found that my original timing felt and sounded best. My next plan of action was to do a compression test just to make sure all cylinders were ...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
Took the car for a test drive around the block and successfully smoked out the entire neighborhood. Power is low, smoke is high, almost sounds like it's missing but hard to tell for sure. I initially timed the pump to .95 mm - even double-checked it, but I might rotate the pump by hand to see if tha...

Re: Block heater woes, Tips for Freeze Plug install
I drove the plug in with some red loctite, but waited a bit to fill the system with coolant. Not sure if I waited long enough, but all's I know is that dang plug ain't leakin! Btw, installing a freeze plug when the engine is already in place is no fun at all. Ended up using my hand-held sledge direc...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
A link to a vid that my friend shot of the initial startup: http://www.facebook.com/v/10100868912713819 It took a couple tries before it finally turned over. Once it did it sounded unlike anything I've ever heard from this car before - a smooth steady idle. A few things: - I used an oil pressure gau...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress
It runs! It's a miracle! I'm filled with a mix of satisfaction that I got the engine running, and anticipation over how well everything works. Backing up a bit, I had been struggling over how to fill a coolant hole in the head that was smack dab over the second oil drain hole on the block. Well, I m...

Re: Block heater woes, Tips for Freeze Plug install
I bought a steel freeze plug. Different sources (internet and friends) recommend using red locktite (thread locker) on contact areas of freeze plug. It's liquid-based (not silicone) so whatever drips into water jacket will get dilluted (right?). Also heard putting the freeze out plug in the freezer ...

Block heater woes, Tips for Freeze Plug install
On filling my system with coolant for the first time, I got a steady stream of coolant from around the block heater. The heater came with the block.... I left it there because it was solid brass and looked like a tight fit, but once I got it out I realized the o-ring was shot. I cleaned up the walls...

Re: NA --> ECO Conversion + Turbo Rebuild Kit
Hmm, good info. I'm not sure if I was clear or not, but I wasn't trying to force air IN to the bearing area, but was just using the mityvac on the drain line to suck oil THROUGH the bearing area. Either way, I'll do some more tests and probably end up opening it up to take a better look at everythin...
