Thanks Fatmobile, I thought it was weird and have never seen a woodruff key fly out, though I suppose it's possible. Before I read your post I pulled the sprocket off of the original 1.6 mechanical that was in the car and found no key either. As for getting it off the new engine, the A2 belt guard w...

Woodruff Key on Camshaft?

I just pulled the camshaft sprocket on my ~86 Hydraulic N.A. that I'm putting in my Rabbit to replace the oil seal. I had a two legged puller lightly tensioned, tapped the sprocket and it popped off. Now I see a slot for a woodruff key with nothing in it; is there actually a key that goes in there?,...

I have used a reamer meant for roughing up a hole in a tire before you put a plug in, it fits in the hole of a used heat shield with a bit of friction. I don't know how well it would work for you though, non of the heat shields I have pulled have been very coked up.

Thanks everyone, I ended up removing the carrier and tried removing the seal with my fingers but it would not budge. I then tried hammering it out from the rear with the old seal, trying not to damage it, but it still would not move. I finally drilled a hole in seal, put a screw in and popped it out...

You can still get some of the old posts off of Google. In the search box put in "site:vwdieselparts.com/forum" minus the quotes, submit it, then click "Cached" under the post you want to see. You can search for specific posts by adding the search terms before or after the site sp...

I just used my fingers, that's why I think it went in too easy. In one of your posts you said you had to used the pressure plate to get it in and then use a block of wood to tap it in flush; not me, it just popped right in.

Thanks,
Jason

I would go the opposite route of Coke, check the stop solenoid first. A couple months ago I looked at a Caddy that a local guy was selling but could not get it running, after cranking it a few times I realized that it was getting no fuel. I asked him if he had some wire, then had him hold the wire t...

Pressing in motor and transmission mounts

Thanks stueveone, I managed to cut out the passenger side motor mount already, but like you said lots of care is involved. I guess I will have to bring the mounts to a machine shop to get them pressed in, based on your experience. Do you or anyone else have a picture or measurements of how the mount...

Re: Cylinder Leak Down Test

Any recommendations on modifying compression tester. I have one that has a piece that goes into injector hole and a gauge w/hose and quik disconnect. I took a harbor freight diesel compression tester and added a 1/4" npt male air quick disconnect to the one that fits in the injector hole, then...

Pressing in motor and transmission mounts

Is it necessary to get the motor and transmission mounts for a rabbit pressed into the brackets at a machine shop or is this something I can do at home without the benefit of a hydraulic press.

Thanks,
Jason

Did I do the rear main seal wrong?

I just replaced the rear main seal on my 1.6D hydraulic engine using the ice cream container trick from Fatmobile. I put some new engine oil on my finger then wiped it on the seal figuring it would help it slide in and it did, almost too easy I'm thinking. So is the seal going to pop out just as eas...

Thats too bad that all of them are lost, there was so much good info. I knew I should have used HTTrack to save the site to my computer instead of bookmarking, I'm going to have to try to salvage some from the google cache. When did this happen? I wonder if would be possible to have a parallel read-...

thermometers

Those thermometers are great, I used the wired kind and soldered on longer wires to the headphone type jack. The wired ones use hardly any power, mine has been on continuously for about three years with the original AAA battery. The only bad thing is that there is no light so I cannot see it at nigh...

MREA Energy Fair June 15 - 17

I know it's coming very soon but if any of you have a chance, please go to The Midwest Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair in Custer, Wisconsin. It is the best and most informative event you will go to all year, I guarantee it. This will be my third year and would not miss it for anything. ...
