Re: 81 Dasher Turn Signals
Could be just my dumb luck, but the Dashers we've had seemed to be much less plagued with ground connection problems than have our Rabbits. OTOH that's still where I'd probably start my troubleshooting. Also helpful is to set up mirrors in front & in back (the rear mirror(s) visible from your ca...

Good for you. The insurance company's ignorance & loss = your good parts. 8) To amend to an oft-quoted cliche... Like 'beauty', the value of a vehicle is in the eye of the beholder... or the owner... or the dreamer... or the crazy collector! IMO that opens the door to all kinds of possibilities....

Re: Blinking Glow Plug light.
Any water leaks around the dash? If so, it could also be a damp glow plug relay.

Re: My stepvan gone lite-up lass night
Entire instrument cluster, stereo, light switches, bulbs, wiper motor(s) & rear window defroster grid could be fried. The spots where chassis & component ground leads terminate may be especially affected and probably need, at the very least, a thorough cleaning. Their corrosion is usually a ...

Re: Floorboard
A "repair" all depends on how exacting you want to be. An ex-roommate (a now-retired VW/Porsche dealer tech) had similar issues with his '68 beetle, so he wire-brushed the areas around the holes (top & bottom), used a 'rust converter' liquid, let it cure, laid down fiberglass & res...

dont forget the feeler gauges, a couple of other tools you need but this goes farther when you actually loosen or change out a timing belt, timing belt tensioning tool, 300mm adj wrench... " 300mm adj wrench "? Dude... you've got some big nuts there! They must exist on huge marine...

Local A/C service centers, or even RV suppliers, usually have an assortment of mounting hardware. Hint: it might even be in an SAE/fractional sizing rather than metric, since it's essentially just a spacer/vibration damper combo.

Re: How to determine correct head gasket thickness
OK, so I did the straight edge with a feeler gauge and I came up with approx. .6mm to .8mm. That makes it a 1 notch head gasket. Does this sound right for a 1.6 turbo block for mech. lifters? That really depends on the head & block machining the engine previously received, as well as the actual...

Clean all the wire terminal connections & light sockets with a fine stainless steel wire brush or medium wet & dry sandpaper. Uhh... make sure the battery negative is disconnected first! Don't forget to scrub clean all the ground connections, IMO the most frequent PITA when it comes t...

Get it in the general area by ear then drive.
Move it a hair and try it again.
Keep moving until it gets worse then move it back.
Yep... I think I just heard hagar laughing!

... I'm not sure why the 11mm seems to thread in less deep than the 12mm. Probably because the thread is wrong, and 11mm bolts(hex/Allen head or IIRC the gasser XZN/'triple-square' stretch bolts) are shorter than the 12mm bolts. you can also compare the depth of the bolt holes plus the thickness th...

Re: Injection pipes
Rumor has it that missing line clamps &/or insulators can lead to cracked injector pipes also. Does this seem true, or is it just idle gossip? Somewhat related question (since I really don't want to trash any lines when I swap for a TD): Which of the injector pipes is different in a 1.6TD vs. a ...

Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions
Sure it's not a 1.5D engine? That's the dipstick setup they had. x2 Typically the 1.5 blocks were cast with "D" on the IP side, while the early 1.6L blocks wore a "1.6D" casting mark. In terms of reliability & longevity, you can build a better 1.5L using a 1.6 block (that ta...

The '80 Dasher wagon(1.6n.a., "2M" 5-speed, 195/60-14) shows similar results in surface street/freeway crazy commuting traffic: consistent 43mpg, corrected. Actually the 195/60-14 tires corrected the slightly optimistic oem speedo/odo readouts. Why is our a.m. commuting traffic so insane (...

Cylinder scoring @ same place? Sounds more like he had a problem with the rings to me, maybe inadequate tension or a burr on the end of a ring (assuming the ring gaps were spaced out @ 120 degrees, not 'lined up all purty'!). IIRC the Bentley manual for the Dasher has some good illustrations showing...
