Thanks for that link, John!
John, I have seen that keen diagram they've got of the entire coolant systems, which is somewhat helpful. Yet still, I'm reluctant to put in an order at the dealership for a part # that I'm not certain of, because of their 20% restocking fee. It doesn't help that I trusted another auto parts website...

I Need '82 coolant tank part #
The coolant tank which has the radiator cap on it; I need the part number from an '82, and desperately! I know it's NOT 068 121 405D. It could be 068 121 405BU. It's crucial that somebody find this out for me; the dealerships don't know, the factory repair manual doesn't tell me, and Obi Wan Kenobi ...

swap the 4th gear, or import tranny from germany/south afric
As the owner of a pokey '82 diesel westy, I'm well acquainted with the top speed of these vans. Folks have swapped out 4th for a taller gear successfully. The expensive option is to find a 5-speed tranny from germany or south africa, and import that puppy. I'm leaning toward the latter option; perha...

must swap ENTIRE engine, not just turbo stuff
If you're after more power, it is suicide to simply put a turbo-charger onto the stock 1.6. It will get too hot for the pistons and the head, and it will melt. You need to consider a fully rebuilt engine; either a 1.6 or a turbo'ed 1.6; also consider the 1.9 turbo. Have you checked compression, done...

Anybody own an '83 diesel?
Turns out this '82 of mine's head seems to be in fine shape; it started up instantly, and there's no signs of leakage or power problems thus far... However, it obviously has had cooling system issues; presumably the latest coolant work was a replacement plastic tank. (The vans have a plastic tank re...

dream eng: 5cyl TDI. Reality eng: 1.9TD
Justin and J.R., Very interesting thread. I've an '82 diesel westy eventually in the market for a peppier engine as well. If I had $5k for the conversion, I'd perhaps go with the 5cyl TDI's that have recently hit the american parts market. Realistically, I think I'll go with the 1.9TD. I believe thi...
