WTB: '79 Rabbit Parts

I recently picked up a '79 Rabbit and am working on getting it up to snuff. The local parts availability is non-existent. Here's a list of what I'm currently looking for. driver's side front roll-up window antenna passenger side front door trim passenger side rear corner trim front bumper right side...

Re: 1.9 td into my 91

here's the million dollar question will the pum be set for maximum smileage?! The pump would have the proper timing advance curve. I would provide what I thought was the best static timing spec. The rest is up to your right foot. You could always detune the pump by turning down the max fuel so that...

Re: 1.9 td into my 91

Any mk1/2/3 cruise setup or aftermarket cruise would work. The stock TDI cruise control is built into the engine management and so would not be possible with the mechanical TDI injection pump.

Re: 1.9 td into my 91

If I found a complete donor car with 110,000 miles on a decent running AHU for $1000 I would buy it without hesitation.

I'm not sure about the trans linkage. I know they changed them either with the AHU or the later ALH, but I'm not sure which.

Re: 1.9 td into my 91

Yes, it would eliminate the need for any wiring other than the idiot lights/gauges, fuel stop solenoid and glow plugs. Actually glow plugs aren't even needed on a TDI unless you live in a very cold climate. The pumps I build are based on BRAND NEW Bosch full aneroid pumps with the larger 20mm shaft,...

Re: 1.9 td into my 91

The TDI has a wavy front to the valve cover, injectors that point basically straight down into the head and a conspicuous absence of the accelerator lever on the injection pump and instead just an electrical cable and connector. M-TDI pumps are available and make the TDI installation exactly as diff...

Re: '79 Rabbit - Where's the glow plug relay?

Thanks for the relay info. Body is in great shape. Almost entirely straight (little scrape on driver's side rear wheel well). No rust. Original paint actually shines up well. Interior is in good shape as well aside from the dash. 95,000 miles. Has a 1.6 n/a (not running) and a 5-speed FF trans. I pi...

Re: '79 Rabbit - Where's the glow plug relay?

This is the first rabbit that I have owned personally, but my father had three of them when I was in High School. That was quite a few years ago. This one is currently inop and has been for the last sixteen years! Someone has pulled all but one of the relays from the relay panel. Does anyone have a ...

'79 Rabbit - Where's the glow plug relay?

I just picked up a '79 rabbit and the glow plug system has been hacked a bit. Where's the stock glow plug relay supposed to be located?

Re: new top cover seal seems to big

I have resealed many pumps (cottage business for a little while) and have used both seals. I used the o-seal on quite a few pumps and had one that leaked. After that I used cut the nubs off that seal and used it on even more pumps and never had a single issue. The nubs must be cut off very accuratel...

And finally, leakage between a coolant passage and a cylinder will result in pressurization of the expansion tank when running due to the high compression of a diesel engine. Some coolant may make it into the cylinder on the intake or exhaust strokes, but usually not much by the time pressurization...

Re: How do you guys get the I/P's main seal out with the sha

Those seals can be a pain to remove. I wrap copper or aluminum sheet around the shaft before I try to pull the seal so I don't scratch the shaft. Man I have TRIED HARD to scratch a junk shaft and couldn't. I have literally put all of my body weight on a sharpened screwdriver on the shaft and have b...
