Re: Pump not pumping?

For what it's worth the $400 I spent on a rebuilt pump from Jack was money well spent. Made the Rabbit run much stronger and more smoothly. It's been about 4 years since buying it and I'm still very pleased with the performance.

Re: Rabbit Speedometer Cable Pics or info?

it has to be over 20" but I don't have a good way to measure either. finding replacement speedo cables has become a major pain and now you can just about only get repair kits which is just the inside cable and an end you need to crimp on.. My son's Corrado has a Passat cable in it because we co...

Re: no charge... at a loss

Sounds like you may have fixed it somehow (or the gremlins moved on). I noticed on my Rabbit the other day when it was 11 degrees out, my seat belt light was coming on even though all those leads are disconnected. If I bumped up the heater fan it dimmed and went out on high fan. Back to low fan and ...

Re: 1996 Jetta, 1.9 Diesel - A/C problems

Without seeing it I would guess that changing the geometry on the belt might be risky and having one pop off while driving sounds like an opportunity for a bad day. Personally I would just replace the compressor. Plus I like my A/C and it helps things like defrosting the windshield and so on. Given ...

Re: 1982 1.6 Caddy - waterpump replacement

on my AC equipped Rabbit I removed the IP and bracket to do the wp. It's not a lot of fun but if all the bolts cooperate it's not terrible to do. I did all new hoses too since I had the car 12 years and didn't know the age of what was there. I did this as a major maintenance cycle when I replaced my...

Re: 92 ecodeisel downpipe

personally I would use a piece of strait pipe with the appropriate expanded section to fit over the good part of the down pipe. This assumes you can cut off enough of the bad section and get it out of the cat and still be able to mate up with the straight part of the downpipe. Not sure on the eco di...

Re: no charge... at a loss

If you have a local auto parts store that tests alternators I would take one or both to them and have them tested. At least eliminate that possibility. If they test good under load, I suppose you could try the exciter wire direct to the battery. Are you sure the main power wiring from alternator to ...

Re: 82 Rabbit with AC Alternator mount at the AC bracket

Interesting that you found more than one configuration but I guess I should not be surprised. I have never tried to press the bushing out on mine but the day may come. I'd like to take mine completely apart and see if I could get a machinist friend to bush the whole mess but his time is hard to come...

Re: 82 Rabbit with AC Alternator mount at the AC bracket

It is pressed in and the alternator normally doesn't have one in that spot, at least not on all the ones I have seen. You may be able to coax it to move in the bracket using a large C-clamp and a large socket or bushing. Possibly a torch to heat things up too.

Re: A/C Golf; how to remove crank/waterpump/compressor belt?

I have done the easy (but crazy) way of using a remote starter switch and a screwdriver under the belt to flip the belt off the pulley by bumping the starter switch judiciously. Same for putting one back on. However, the compressor does have bolts towards the radiator that allow the compressor to sw...

Re: Radiator fan assembly question...

I believe I still have a dual one in the shed from a 1993 Passat wagon that had a eco diesel in it (transplant) - car is gone, a few parts remain. It is one of the belt driven ones. I don't suppose you are anywhere the Washington DC area? Shipping is probably high due to the size. Not sure if I stil...

Re: Need help pulling out! 1982 rabbit caddy speedo removal?

Not sure why you can't get it out but you do need to disconnect the speedo cable first. I can get to mine less some skin by going up from under the dash. have not found a better way. Haven't pulled mine out in a while though. I assume you pulled the dash bezel/facade off (wood grain) already.

Re: moaning while turning

Mine will occasionally do that but it's the spring on the driver's side in the strut housing. If I spray that area with lube it goes away for a year or two. Not very evident while driving, it's usually while parking and more with a full turn. So mine may be a totally different symptom. It's very lou...

Re: The unthinkable.

Well my favorite car to drive is still my 82 Rabbit in spite of the usual occasional things you get with a 33 year old car. Headliner was finally secured with a staple gun and my A/C got to where it won't keep my expensive R12 in it for long anymore, but I installed ventshades yeasr ago and it sits ...
