Re: 91 jetta 1.6 diesel

Low compression can behave the same... a compression test will tell a lot.

As noted above, all GPs working together will initially draw ~ 48A, then decrease when heating. If you initially see a fraction of 48V, one or more GPs may be bad.

Re: 81 Jetta diesel is overheating

I'd check the water pump. The lower radiator hose should not be warm/hot if water is flowing. Lack of flow will prevent air from purging. An idling engine will normally cool off (compared to cruising) and low flow will heat up the engine quickly. I'd check to see if the cabin heater gets hot with th...

Re: Prechamber Came Loose, Broke and Fell Into #3 Cylinder

Ouch. Life is interesting, eh? I heard somebody say: " I'll just hone the cylinders, install new rings, and run it. It may last a few minutes, a few miles, or run forever. Maybe it'll run long enough to drive it to the scrap metal yard. I'm just having fun! I like that attitude. Another lump wo...

Re: Speedometer gear for ACN transmission?

Broke's page says you need the red speedo gear (unless you have tiny tires) 62 : 17 = 3.647 (15T) red 66 : 18 = 3.667 (15T) red 74 : 19 = 3.894 (16T) white 63 : 16 = 3.938 (16T) white 67 : 17 = 3.941 (16T) white 68 : 16 = 4.250 (17T) green http://www.brokevw.com/020ratios.html I need a white gear (l...

Re: N/A 1.6. Sucking air from tank?

I simply replaced the separator with a piece of hose and clipped the wires. Problem solved.

Re: Looking for advice N/A 1.6?

I don't see air coming from the injectors as normal. I had clear line coming from the pump and it kept spurting air. I thought it was from the pump until I got clear lines between the injectors and sure enough air was coming from one of the small lines between the injectors. The injector was a piss...

Re: Looking for advice N/A 1.6?

If there is air in the return line to the tank, it may be coming from the supply... a clear line from filter to IP will tell. If the supply line is clear (no air), then it's probably a seal on the IP. WRT the alternator, the exciter wire (thin blue) frequently breaks inside the jacket near the alter...

Re: Looking for advice N/A 1.6?

Air in the little injector lines is totally normal. There isn't much fuel flow through those lines, it's mostly the fuel that slips by the injector guts as the fuel lubricates the moving parts. The air in the small lines may be accumulated over a longer period of time. Air in the pump gets whipped i...

Re: 1.6d performance mods??

Light flywheel is a mistake on a diesel-4... the engine has plenty low-end torque to launch, and the mass of the flywheel smooths out what would otherwise be a self destructing rattlebox.

Re: Looking for advice N/A 1.6?

If your compression tests look good (>350), it is likely already re-ringed and the sky is the limit on how many miles are left (with care).

Ring job is not bad... hell like said above, the money you save can pay for work like that, which continues to pay dividends.

Re: Did I install the flywheel wrong?

PS just checked on Vortex... BrokeVW the tranny guru recommends getting it out. I'd give it a shot by draining it and rolling it over on the bench to help get it near the hole. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4877852-Speedo-gear-fell-in-the-trans-HELP!! http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...

Re: Did I install the flywheel wrong?

Ja, the gear will probably get digested. They probably make em out of plastic for a reason.

You could try draining the case and peeking in, or using a USB flexi camera... they're pretty chap and handy for other stuff.

Re: Looking for advice N/A 1.6?

You can do this. I'm an idiot and even I can do this. There is plenty of help from IDI advocates all over the place. An average driver does 15,000 miles/yr. That's 1500 gallons of gas a year at 2.25/gal = $3,375/yr. for your current daily-driver. With the Golf: Divide that by four = $843.75. You'll ...

Re: 1.6d performance mods??

I don't think the ram air will help much. Pressure increase is small. Exhaust is similar... not much to gain. You can crank up the fuel without much risk on an NA, it just makes soot tho, not much power gain. The way to get more mojo is a turbo. Sure, it costs some time and money, but you actually g...
