Low compression can behave the same... a compression test will tell a lot.

As noted above, all GPs working together will initially draw ~ 48A, then decrease when heating. If you initially see a fraction of 48V, one or more GPs may be bad.

If there is air in the return line to the tank, it may be coming from the supply... a clear line from filter to IP will tell. Light flywheel is a mistake on a diesel-4... the engine has plenty low-end torque to launch, and the mass of the flywheel smooths out what would otherwise be a self destructing rattlebox.

If your compression tests look good (>350), it is likely already re-ringed and the sky is the limit on how many miles are left (with care).

Ring job is not bad... hell like said above, the money you save can pay for work like that, which continues to pay dividends.

PS just checked on Vortex... BrokeVW the tranny guru recommends getting it out. You could try draining the case and peeking in, or using a USB flexi camera... they're pretty chap and handy for other stuff.
