Head/head gasket advise

Here's the situation 1985 golf 1.6D NA, new water-pump, thermostat, verified temp sensors and gauge. The car was overheating under a load, at the top of a long hill or at highway rpms. When the overheating occurred the pressure in the cooling system was intense. I didnt have any hoses blow but I nev...

Re: 1.6 TD vanagon

Thanks for the info, the thread you linked me to is interesting. I'm definitely learning a lot as I go. I will start work on the head soon, after I have my block together and my shop cleared out. I will most certainly need some help with the head. Heres a question that has been on my mind, How do yo...

Re: 1.6 TD vanagon

I hadn't even thought about the different dipstick in the vanagon, now I dont feel so bad. Will I need a different oil pump as well? I pulled the pistons last night and everything looks good. http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac64/coleslaw_NH/GEDC0109.jpg When i was cleaning up I noticed my camshaf...

Re: 1.6 TD vanagon

What about that last cylinder? Is all that oxidization from water or something else that found its way in there? How about the cracks on the prechamber discs. Is this a big deal? Do these need to be replaced or can they be welded like the cracks between the valves? http://i886.photobucket.com/albums...

Here is the Dipstick that I am having trouble with, my guess is that there is a snap ring in there holding it in but it's far too corroded to see. I couldn't find anything in the benty manual either.

I just recently began to tear into this dirty old engine. With no previous experience I have been taking my time and pulling the pieces off slowly. There was a family of some kind of rodents living in the intake tube. I was able to get everything apart so far. I snapped one exhaust manifold stud, bu...

1.6 TD vanagon

I've had my 85 n/a golf for about a year now and I love it. I think it's got me hooked on diesel. I have always wanted a Vanagon and I finally decided that that's what my next project will be. I picked up a 1.6 TD off the list. It allegidley came from a quantum. It's rough on the outside but everyth...

I don't know if I confused someone but my fan is NOT coming on at any time

The thermostat that I installed last night may have solved the problem but it's running hotter on the gauge than before.

I have yet to take it on the highway so I will let everyone know how that goes

thanks for the help with the fan since the fan shouldnt be running at highway speeds the fan is no longer the priority for me (although if it's a fuse consider it done) I had nice green coolant come out of there last night, which leads me to believe that the system is fairly clean. (But you never kn...

cooling fan

85 1.6 NA Golf with AC I am having some overheating issues but only climbing hills and at highway speeds. Through this I found that my cooling fan is not running ever. Both speeds work on the fan when connected directly to the battery, so the fan is good. I tried to jump the fan thermoswitch but it ...

So I removed the water separator and she has been starting easier and more consistantly, but it's still much harder than before moreso in the morning than the afternoon. I plugged in the block heater last night and it woke up very quickly this morning, I think I need new glow plugs. I want to replac...

Maybe all that junk that was in the pickup screen is clogging the water separator too.

I'll remove the separator and give that a shot.

I have all clear fuel lines up front, under the hood.
