There is no key for the cam but there is a slot for one, which is kind of weird. The one everyone is talking about is a half circle metal piece between the crankshaft and the crankshaft pulley.

Yea, the lightness of the rabbit is probably the reason nobody else tried making a snowplow for it. But I am only looking for the blocks, so I can go over the snow, not push it around with a plow or the underside of the car.

Snoway lift blocks for a rabbit

I have read about, but never seen, that Snoway (a snowplow manufacturer in Wisconsin) used to make a 2" front suspension lift for Rabbits and Caddys in the '80s for use with a snowplow they made. Has anybody here used them or something similar? Does anyone have a good picture of one, or better ...

I did some looking around and found that it could be as simple as a replacing some hose to and inside the ECU (computer). I have no idea what they are supposed to do, maybe provide cooling. Personally I think it is more likely that the ROM (the Read Only Memory) has become corrupt somehow which migh...

I guess you guys have answered my question; I kind of figured everybody would say that no deviation from TDC is acceptable, I just wanted to make sure I was not being too picky. I'm going to give it another go right now, I'll let you all know when it roars to life.

Thanks

In my Bentley manual for the VW Beetle (1998 to 2002) it is listed as "Internal Contr. Module ROM Test Error", which sounds like something wrong with the memory in the cars' computer. Our cars have different engines though so it might be something else for you.

I have also loosened the camshaft sprocket so it will rotate freely, but I still cannot get it right; do I possibly just need to make a crankshaft holder?

Acceptable amount of slop when setting the timing?

What is an acceptable amount of slop when setting the timing? I cannot get the timing mark on the flywheel to line up perfect when the camshaft and IP are locked; the timing mark is always about an 1/8 of an inch towards the passenger compartment, is this normal? I have turned the engine over by han...

One more thing,
If you are thinking about a transmission from a gasser they probably do not have the proper cables to actuate the injection pump via the transmission. The speedometer gears, cables, and connections are also of a different design between the automatics and manuals.

Re: Automatic Rabbit diesel???

If the 4 & 5 speeds were the same between the gas & diesel models, it would make sense that an automatic would work for both of them also... Mine came from the factory as an automatic and a 5 speed bolted up just fine. As far as I know all the old automatics (including mine) were 3 speeds w...

I know all about the rabbits with an automatic trans and diesel engine, they are gutless but get around 38 miles per gallon. They are nice to drive around town but the engine turns really fast going down the highway; I have worn ear plugs on long trips. Jason P.S. if anyone is interested I h...

I second what Fatmobile said, pull them out (there is usually a small tab that secures them that you have to lift up with a small screwdriver), then pinch them down with some pliers, then reinsert into the fuse box.

When the head on a gas vehicle of mine started to go a mechanic friend brought over a tester that held some liquid. The contraption allowed the air from the open radiator cap to be "breathed" in through the liquid, it changed color when a certain amount of carbon dioxide passed through it....
