I could only find one temp sensor on the engine, it´s on the gearbox-side, above the coolant hose that runs to the cabin heat exhanger, does the GP relay and the engine temp circuit share the same sensor, sounds highly unlikely to me :? ? On the 1.6D hydraulic I put in my car there was a single se...

With the head on, I shoved a plastic shopping bag into each intake and exhaust port (probably not good if you have a lot of buildup that could break loose, but that's another problem) before cleaning with a wire brush to prevent junk from getting inside. After I was done I dusted off the exposed bag...

I couldn't find the hex headed bolts I wanted and studs seemed like they would not give enough clearance to put the intake back on so I got some allen headed bolts (8mm diameter, 1.25 pitch, 60 mm long, grade 12.9), which worked fine. I think the main problem with removing them was that they were ox...

Intake manifold bolts
It has taken me so long to get to this point that I cannot find the bolts to hold my intake manifold on. If I recall correctly, I had to use an allen wrench to remove them. Should I used grade 8 bolts to replace them and is there a disadvantage to using studs or hex headed bolts in place of the orig...

Priming the engine with oil
I have found that a 13mm 6 point deep well socket connected to a 3/8 in drill with a socket to drill adapter will turn the oil pump on a 1.6 and get oil flowing when placed over the shaft that normally has the vacuum pump on it (good for when your engine has sat a long time and is dry).

Since they are still in the cars I would bring a battery, check the fluids and fire them up. Thats about the only way you can be sure it is in a salvageable condition. With it running you will be able to check if the cooling system pressurizes fast (bad!), what it sounds like, if it smokes bad, etc....

OK that makes sense, having a paralysed arm is a valid reason for putting an auto into one of these things. As far as the starter on an auto, it does go behind the engine instead of in front of the transmission and has a 3 bolt mount like lyeinyoureye said. The different mounting position is also th...

Oh my God why did you convert it to an automatic! There is not much power in these things and much less when you put it though a slush box. My rabbit had one and is now getting a proper 5 speed manual. I'm not familiar with the 1.9s's but if they are anything like the 1.6's, you will need a starter ...

Does anyone have a dial gauge in Appleton or Green Bay, WI?
Is there anybody in the Appleton or Green Bay area of Wisconsin that has a dial gauge so I can check the timing on my new engine? I've spent so much money on my Rabbit that I cannot stomach spending another $100 for a special tool I'm only going to use a few times. I would be willing to give a secur...
