Re: Uview Combustion Gas in Coolant Tester

The Uview tester needs a good volume of air in the coolant system in order to draw enough "inhales" with the pressure bulb. Otherwise, if not enough air, the vacuum created will not allow the tester to draw as many "inhales" as recommended in the instructions. I could only get ab...

Re: Overheating Investigation, Crud in Coolant System

Just a reminder....I am the originator of this threaed....... The car is back from the shop. All new radiator, hoses, water pump, t-stat, heater core (installed, not hooked up yet), v-belts, side and front head hose flanges, pressure cap. I purchased a new fill bottle to install myself. It's in the ...

Re: Uview Combustion Gas in Coolant Tester

I've got the car back from the shop. Only the cooling system was renewed. No other engine work. I did the pressure test from cold using a latex glove over the fill neck. It stayed limp. I put my hand over the fill opening; no pressure felt. Apparently, no pressure, so, no leak issues. I've ordered t...

Re: Barb in the Radiator??? Could Plug.

Surfcam, The correct tool is the key. I'll look around to see if I can find one. I would differentiate between what I call "crimp" clamps and "spring" clamps. The crimpers are one time use and the special tool, to which you refer, used to tighten them pinches a catch on the clamp...

Re: Barb in the Radiator??? Could Plug.

surfcam, On Autoweek TV Magazine, I heard Goss say that worm-screw type clamps tend to deteriorate the hoses or the plastic radiator more quickly because of the metal under the worm -crew(????). He said to stay with the crimp-type clamps. I personally like the screw type better and find them to be e...

Re: Draining coolant

OK

When I get the car back and can dive in there I will get a better perspective on what can be done.

Thanks for the help and guidance.

Re: Draining coolant

82vdub, Yeah, ideally both plugs would be in place to get all of the coolant out. Could you first heat the engine to some degree so the t-stat opens, then drain??? Cool enough so that you could first remove the fill bottle cap......... I was wondering if the t-stat would open if heat is applied to t...

Re: Draining coolant

Fatmobile, It's a temperature sensor adapter. Common on Ebay. How about really eliminating the mess and putting one of these in the lower radiator hose with the 1/8 NPT hole facing down.????? Pull your plug, pull this plug.......voila !!!!! Do you think that would drain all of the coolant then????? ...

Re: Uview Combustion Gas in Coolant Tester

No, I haven't done the pressure test. The car is still in the shop. If it's cool when I pick it up, I'll try the pressure test right there. Maybe the using the tester too. I'll probably leave it if things point to a gas leak or warp. The tester is suppose to be good for both gas and diesel engines. ...

Uview Combustion Gas in Coolant Tester

1991 VW Jetta 1.6 non-turbo, no power steering or A/C Quick review: engine overheated; heater core blew; hot engine limped home 50 miles; got instrument cluster working; car runs just fine around the block, but still overheats; new radiator, heater core, water pump, t-stat, hoses being installed at ...

Re: Draining coolant....The Fatmobile Way

Fatmobile suggested a bump for this posting....... I like it ! Can't reef on this like the oil drain plug....... for a little overkill (if there is such a thing) one could drill a hole in the square lug and safety wire it to the nearest bolt head of the water pump. Not the best technique, but if don...

Cooling System Pressure Relief - ???????

When my cooling system blew it's top, I observed the hot steam venting from a port on the side of the translucent fill bottle. I thought it just didn't look like it was big enough to have a relief valve in it. Now I read that it's the black cap that has the relief valve built in to it. And the steam...
