MK1, MK2, etc ????

I have a 1991 Jetta 1.6 diesel, non-turbo, w/o AC, with power steering. I stopped paying attention to model numbers over 20 years ago.... I'd like to know what all of the different model designations are and to which model year Jetta diesel they apply. Reading the forums has made me curious. I think...

Water Pump Tip

Add a little RTV to the bolts on the pump's backside, and where the threads extend out from the T-stat housing. The idea is that it helps prevent corrosion into the threads, and prevents broken bolts down the road. I ran across this tip and thought I would contribute something for all the help I hav...

Re: Overheating Investigation, Crud in Coolant System

82vdub, They are going to only renew the cooling system components at this time. I'll drive it around the shop for a while, return to the shop and take a look at the engine. The two-hose flange on the front of the cylinder head may have a leak. If the engine is cool and coolant pressure has diminish...

Re: Overheating Investigation, Crud in Coolant System

82vdub, The car is in the shop for new T-stat, water pump, hoses, radiator, antifreeze. Oh, and a flush, I stressed that I wanted it cleaned out really well......."Yeah", Tom said, "I overheard you talking to Debbie"!!! I think he got the point. So, I don't have it at home to run...

Re: How to Drain/Refill Coolant__1.6 Diesel Non-turbo

I'm going with all new parts and antifreeze.

I will drain the system every couple of years.

Thanks for all of the tips.

Re: How to Drain/Refill Coolant__1.6 Diesel Non-turbo

This "gunk" is a real unknown and not worth dealing with at this age of my vehicle. I am going to bite the bullet and purchase all new components and be done with it. After all, I have spent very little money on this car in 23 years !!! She deserves the treat ! When you do the flush, what ...

Re: Barb in the Radiator??? Could Plug.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I think my 78 Rabbit had that configuration, but the 91 Jetta Diesel does not.

What is the "barb in the radiator" that 82vdub refers to here?

Is this it??

How to Drain/Refill Coolant__1.6 Diesel Non-turbo

I've never changed the coolant myself. Bentley's says that these hoses(labelled "1" in the pic) have to be loosened/removed/slid back. Maybe take the cap off of the fill bottle. What about the heater core??? Bentley's says to reattach the hoses and fill through the overflow bottle, run the...

Re: Overheating Investigation, Crud in Coolant System

Surfcam, Your message is validating. I've gotten a little hopeful that I may NOT have warped my head. This is what I interpreted as a sign of a warped head. No other water leaks detected after inspection with flashlight and crawling under the car and looking at the back side.....just some light oil ...

Re: Glow Plug Light Will Not go Out

My water separator has never had any detectable water in it. I've drained it a few time just to check and it was pure diesel coming out. I suppose I could pull the connector, but I will not. I can block the light with tape. An indicator light coming from the glow plug bus is an interesting idea.

Re: Oil In Coolant or Coolant In Oil?????

damac, NO oil cooler on my car ...... 1991 Jetta 1.6 diesel, non-turbo. Fatmobile, I've never noticed any flow into the fill bottle.....not to say it has never done so. Do I understand that a plugged hose to the fill bottle could cause and overheat situation?? The hose that I am referring to is the ...

Re: Overheating Investigation, Crud in Coolant System

Thanks again, 82vdub !! That hose you mention, from the top radiator hose to the fill bottle seems to be plugged. I pulled it off, engine cold, of course, and tried to blow or suck from it. I could not get any air to move either direction. I put my tongue on the open end of the hose and squeezed the...

Re: Leaky Heater Core....Temporary Fix???

I joined the hoses together and will leave it that way until I resolve an overheat situation with which I am dealing. My system has to be flushed and scrubbed before I let it flow through that nice, virgin heater core. I had driven the car for some distance at high speed. It overheated either way, ...

Re: Glow Plug Light Will Not go Out

I opened the glow plug relay........beautifully clean little electro-mechanical device. Spick and Span. Haven't such nice, shiny copper since real copper pennies!!! It started blinking today on a short drive .....! ! Not worth the worry at this time. Black tape will do the trick. Though I do like t...
