Re: Newbie to the Van!

Well the crank nut was above 45ft lbs so that doesn't seem to be a problem. However I did find a couple of things that helped it run better. First was I removed a priming bulb from the fuel line that leads to the IP. I also advanced the timing to 1.02mm. The engine sounded better and accelerated smo...

Oil in my air intake- bad breather vent?

Ok so I've been finding oil in my air intake system. All the way from the breather vent on top of the cam cover through the intercooler and to the intake manifold. I'm guessing it's all coming from the breather vent, there is quite a bit of what feels like oil sludge and some liquid in the breather ...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

I've set the timing 3 times now, each time with the cam plate, IP lock and dial gauge. I'm not that new at it, but are these lock nuts just normal ny-locks or something else. Definitely no way a ny-lock would grab.... Guess I'll have to trust lock tight and keep checking for a while... As far as vis...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Ok so the exhaust leak was simple and kind of scary. The manifold was missing the 2 nuts towards the front of the van, top and bottom. Replaced them and added some blue loc-tight to all of them. It seems the studs are short however, on some of them only a couple of threads are showing and on one the...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Found a return port on the tank and was able to plumb the diesel return to tank! Seems to be working well now; but a bubble will form right before the pump if it sits for too long... Now I'm noticing an exhaust leak from the manifold. Happens when RPMs are ramping up, about 1/4 throttle; you'll hear...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

I looked when I was running the tubing for the vacuum gauge and didn't see any other port on the tank. But when it was swapped from a gasser to diesel they would have had to installed a new tank correct? Or can you use a gas tank for diesel? I guess I would have to put a "T" in the line go...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

It's a pain in the ass. I pull the return and put it into a jar while while the ign is on, keeping the "T" plugged. When it's dribbling out I do a quick switch. Takes a few tries but it seems to work.

Is there and easier way??

Re: Newbie to the Van!

The lines were cracked @ the injectors and took about 30-45sec of cranking to get spurts. I'm seeing fuel in the clear lines before the pump and seem to have quite a bit of pressure in the line. One thing that makes this more complicated is my return from the pump goes to a "T" into the li...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

New plugs installed, replaced the hard lines and got all the way to having the fuel lines purged of air before the battery died. As the battery wound down, I didn't hear any sputtering or see any smoke so I'm hoping a fresh charge will remedy all this. Question; what if any harm is there in leaving ...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Well sure as s*$% 3 out of 4 GP are kaput! put them to the battery this morning and not even a spark from 3 of them and the 4th only got warm... Hmmm so I'm hoping they were tired and old before all this tinkering which just pushed them over the edge. Already have a new set in the mail so those will...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

interesting... I do have a rather large battery; in fact it's so large the label with the ratings on it has rubbed off on the battery housing.... So I don't know the Ah but it's a big one; best guess would be about 500 to 550.

Thanks for the input!

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Thanks Coke for the explanation of how it all works together! I'm an electrician by trade (who deals with ALOT of DC) so I'm pretty sure I can trouble shoot it with that info, I was just getting a little mystified by how the circuit works- what's sending a signal to where. 12v seems high?... Hmmm I'...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

I am getting 12v at the plugs; last time I checked via resistance and they all showed a little over .6ohm. Thanks for the amp numbers I'll hook my fluke up and see what the range shows. One quick question: when the glow plug light in the dash goes out I still meter 12v @ the plugs. When I start it w...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Last night I meant to pull the GPs and give them a test, but the air in the line just took too long and I ran out of daylight :x It may be a few days before I get some time off but checking plugs and clearing air are top priority. What fist caused this was putting in the "T" for a vacuum g...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

Well I may have screwed it up more then before... I've got a giant air bubble before the pump and can't seem to clear it. I've got a priming bulb coming from the fuel filter but it still doesn't want to clear the air... Fuel will flow though the pump fine so I'm not sure what's keeping it from clear...
