Ya, and some heat from a propane torch.

Re: Oil Dip Stick Tube..... Grommet/Seal?

Generally, they are removed from below (oil pan off).
But, I have used a circular tipped vise grip to carefully grip at the top. Then, use a small hammer to tap-tap on the vise grips.

Yes, they are hard to remove, but that is also why they seal. Hey....nobody said it was going to be easy out west!

Re: Oil Dip Stick Tube..... Grommet/Seal?

A tube off a gas (85 to 92) is a straight steel tube with tapered/smaller diameter bottom part which goes into the block fairly hard and stays put and doesn't really seem to leak. You simply have to bend it somewhat forward to clear the pump and bending it takes.....oh.....6 seconds or so. Maybe mor...

Why not just ask the question you want to know about???
The rack can be replaced with or without dropping the subframe. How good a mechanic are you?

Re: fuel mileage

I would honestly think that a 3 + E transmission would be an absolute nightmare behind a 1.5. It certainly was for me behind a 1.6. I spent ALL my time with the footfeed smashed to the floor just attempting to get the car literally moving. I think that transmission actually made me burn more fuel si...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Installation

I have installed a lot of spindle bearings without a press. A little play in the finished product is not really a problem. Some of mine have had some play....some not. On the other hand, a super tight bearing (slopless) would tend to worry me more than the one with a little play. Why, because it is ...

Re: have mercy, I added way too much oil and maybe broke it.

You are naive on several levels: 1) Class action lawsuits take a massive amount of money and effort to initiate. 2) Mk. II's use a different oil monitoring system than your older clunker. 3) Fram filters not only create the described problems (from time to time) they will also occasionally (upon sta...

Or just wire in a 50 amp spade fuse with a fuse holder.
But, if you want to stay stock....there are hundreds of places to buy the fuses....maybe the owner of this site.

Yikes...you would be very angry if you saw some of the stuff I have sent to the crusher. I've only parted out one car that was anywhere near that bad!

Re: Oil Dip Stick Tube..... Grommet/Seal?

All of my Mk. II diesels have Mk. II gasoline tubes and dipsticks because I simply got tired of messing with this seemingly endless problem with the standard diesel tubes. The gas ones are totally different and need to be slightly bent to use with the diesel pump. But, once you get it in.....life is...

Re: Vw 1.6L diesel JK Vs JP

I drove the JK car today which is equipped with a tach. It was driven in very hilly 3rd and 4th gear road. At 2,200, the car is just beginning to make any torque which is usuable. At 2,700, the engine is sustaining in nature (i.e. this feels like the true torque max rpm). The observations were made ...

Re: Vw 1.6L diesel JK Vs JP

I, personally, would be inclined to think this is a typographical error. I had an original JK in my deceased '84 American-made Rabbit. It is now totally rebuilt in an '85 Jetta. They are mechanical lifter engines with nothing out of the ordinary. My JK is still normally aspirated and runs like any o...

Re: New Problem in Pittsburgh

Leakage at the rear main (trans input) can be difficult to determine. Often, oil will leak higher up on the engine and work it's way down and appear to be coming from inside the bell. Do you truly smell gear lube when you sniff the leakage on your fingers? Perhaps some of that crap you already used ...
