Years ago, I had one with the darned 4-speed (gasoline) and it was always depressing to pull up to the pump (EVEN BACK THEN!!!!!).
No matter how I drove it, it really struggled to get into the 30's.
I believe there is considerably more wind resistance than the Rabbit sedans.

Pardon me, as I am slow and stupid....... So you are saying that I can purchase an in-line, graft all the appropriate (already owned from the transverse donor engine) parts, bolt it in, and go???? Reason I ask is that I have seen several in-lines recently advertised for about $500 less than a transv...

May I ask: did the "bang" truly come and go....or did the nose occur once and then subside? Was there less power being produced by the engine after the incident? Is there a chance you had a loose or "floating" bolt or nut under the timing cover which eventually vibrated into a sp...

I believe he is making reference to a longitudinally orientation versus a transverse. I.E. Dasher vs. Rabbit and such.
I have wondered about this myself. What IS the difference in the blocks, etc?
Or can a person "convert" an in-line by using the necessary alternator, A/C, etc. brackets??

Richard, is this just basic paint (like Rust-oleum) or is it something special? Does it tend to flake off quickly or does it work for the long haul?

Ahh...you might want to reconsider. Those starters are very rare to find and rather expensive if you can find one when one needs them. I saw a rebuilt one go for a high price on ebay a few years ago. (competitor's anme removed by moderator) bought two of those off me several years ago. I traded for ...

Removal through the top is even easier with the head off. Have the belt end of the engine up about 15 -20 degrees (something like that). Watch your brake lines there behind the engine. Work in a sort of: up a little....forward a little....up a little....forward a little sort of fashion. Installation...

Did you ever go ahead and run this fluid yet? What did you mean by "clean?" Did you mean new or used fluid? How did/are you going about filtering the fluid? I have found that running up to 50% is a "go." This was posted in another pickup truck forum. BUT, I am trying to determine...

Do you or a friend ever get out to the Rapid City area? If I had some time, I would give you a pair of rears...do you have your own spring compressor??? Hey, are there any good A2 Jetta bodies out there? I used to live in the Rock Springs area and used to pass through Casper and visit the VW dealer....
