Re: HELP, easy belt replacement turns into nightmare......
Do you now recall guys always saying that it is a good idea to turn the engine over with a wrench (on the crankshaft) after working on timing, etc? Diesels will eject unburned fuel when a valve is bent. I'm willing to bet it is running rough as well. I would be inclined to perform a compression test.

If it is a Mk. II, is your top radiator hose keeping the throttle from closing properly? Common problem.

Re: cracked prechambers
My local VOA trained mechanic friend tells me that the white build-up is due to antifreeze entering the combustion chamber. He also tells me that new precups are available throgh Worldpac for about $40 each.

In addition to the plastic splash shield, are you running an old style vacuum pump....it would be helpful if you guys who want help would identify the car in question. If it is an old style vacuum pump and the diaphragm in it is shot, the engine will draw oil this way to contribute to a NASA-style l...

Re: Rough idle and Injector testing
Sometimes, the little delivery valves no longer work quite well. If you have an older pump lying around, switch out the delivery valve on the suspected cylinder. According to your pressure values, the one cylinder is weaker by a ways. This car ever had a new cylinder head gasket?

Re: Injection Pump problem too
I don't know.....why don't you try running a hot wire directly from your battery to the pump solenoid electrical attachment (or other source of juice). Or, screw it out and remove the spring and plunger for a minute. Almost sounds like this could be the problem. Running out of ideas. I am impressed ...

Re: Injection Pump problem too
Couple of things come to mind here: 1) you're sure you reattached those two lines at the fuel pickup/sender correctly? 2) does this car still have the big plastic fuel seperator down there ahead of the tank? It may be cracked and drawing air now. Additionally, you probably sucked it dry as the intan...

Re: injection pump locking
The key and keyway will be located at about the 10:00 position as you view the fuel pump sprocket while leaning over the passenger-side fender into the car.
You may have to lock the pump and pull the nut and washer to view it.

Re: Intro & marble mystery
I totally rebuild 3 engines two years ago. Two hydros and one mechanical.
They all run different and I set them up to run very well when warmed up.
Have you turned the load screw on the pump back?
Yes, these pumps run different with age due to wear characteristics.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
If you end up substituting a bolt anywhere among those three spots, make SURE that the bolt you chose is only long enough to secure the nut and really no more. Why? Because as the engine/pump build rpm, the pulley on the pump is actually drawn toward the pump with inertia. And if you have a bolt rem...
