Well, THIS is certainly a problem as the centralized rib not only acts to hold the nylon fuel pickup insert centralized, but also to keep the fuel pickup insert from falling inward (into the tank) as well.

If you have access to some 5.5 inch steels, I run 185/70-13's on cars which have extra power to spare (mostly gas rigs). There is a gearing difference you can really feel. If you have the original 4.5's......(whine!) I guess 175/70-13's. I think they used to make 175/80's but doubt if they do anymor...
