Re: 83 Quantum Troubles

Personally, I don't think you are going to ever see the kind of mpg's you are expecting. The Quantum is a much heavier car and I doubt it is very good on aerodynamics, Additionally, you are running a little 1.6 diesel engine which is struggling a great deal just to spin that torque convertor.....whi...

Re: Fuel Leak

I suppose the actual top-cap on the tank might be loose. Perhaps a previous owner had the tank out or had the fuel sender/screen out at some point in the past. The cap is threaded just like a jar lid...right-hand threads. You can carefully use a long screwdriver and a small hammer to gently tap-tap ...

Re: Fuel Leak

I just telephoned the bus depot to confirm. The young lady said that, "...if the dealer no longer stocks these, then we won't be able to get it either. The 5 to 7 business days means we get the part from the dealer. So, no we can't help you. Do you have any salvage yards near you?" Crap. T...

Re: Fuel Leak

Well, THIS is certainly a problem as the centralized rib not only acts to hold the nylon fuel pickup insert centralized, but also to keep the fuel pickup insert from falling inward (into the tank) as well.

I was hoping the later cars might have used these same items.

Re: Fuel Leak

Here is a used one which is still useable. Single piece molding (?) with a bridge/connection at the top and two plies to comprise the sealing aspect. Not at all sure how a person could produce one from scratch. http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/Dakotakid1/Fueltankgasket003.jpg http://i1176.ph...

Re: Injector pump questions

Wednesday, I had my '85 Jetta with freshly (about 12,000 miles ago) rebuilt (new pistons and bore) solid lifter n/a with standard '86 model external idle-adjust pump pretty well maxed out at 92 mph with AGS trans and 175/70-13 tires at about 3,500 feet altitude on level ground. I was running late ge...

Re: Fuel Leak

Yes, I was the guy who said I was told by my local VW (500-pound harley-rider) parts person that the (formerly) $17 big gasket/sleeve is no longer available. However, I do NOT think that is the case as this parts person is a lazy moron. So, please let us know if these are still "on the books&qu...

Yes, the yellow-bottle Pennzoil Synchromesh.
The AGS trans shifts very well with no whines, bangs, clanks.

Re: 90 Jetta transmission whine

A good friend of mine suggested me running a 50/50 mix of the GM oil and gear lube. Seems to be doing fine....has not been that many miles yet. The fifth gear housing end of the trans is weeping at the gasket. But, I do not think there is a correlation. I need to replace the gasket as soon as I can ...

Re: '79 Rabbit Tires - How Big?

If you have access to some 5.5 inch steels, I run 185/70-13's on cars which have extra power to spare (mostly gas rigs). There is a gearing difference you can really feel. If you have the original 4.5's......(whine!) I guess 175/70-13's. I think they used to make 175/80's but doubt if they do anymor...

Re: Loud popping from transmission or CV joint?

Tip? Yes, forget this whole pull-the-speedo-cable thing with a Mk. I. This procedure came about on the '85 and beyond cars because the transmission had/has a few degrees of slope due to different engine mounts. On, the Mk. I, just remove the drain plug....drain...put plug back in. Fill from side plu...

Re: Loud popping from transmission or CV joint?

To me, it sounds like you have a lot of work to do on the front end/drive shafts, etc. I highly recommend that you purchase a good/comprehensive repair manual for your car. The best is called a Robert Bentley manual. They are about $45 or more and are listed for specific blocks of cars (like '74 to ...

Yes, the cv joints rotate any time the wheel is rotating.
