Re: Loud popping from transmission or CV joint?
Not enough to go on. Wonder if the clutch plate rivets went or if the springs in the plate have gone to happy hunting grounds. Was/is this clutch working well right now? Does it slip or release smoothly? Yes, CV joints will make noise eventually. But, this whole "noise stops as soon as I clutch...

Re: Wheel bearings
You used the terms: front, pressed in, and big clip. So, this has to be spindle bearings. What does the owner of this site sell (diplomacy intact)? 10,000 miles on a spindle bearing....yikes! I hear China a-callin' on that one!!! Three possibilities to cause negatives installing spindle bearings. 1)...

Re: Wheel bearings
You're talking spindle bearings....right? I don't think I have ever used anything BUT FAG-brand and have done very well. Usually 180,000 miles or so until play shows up. However, all the spindle bearings I buy are usually old-stock items off forums, and, at THAT time of manufacture, all of these wer...

Re: eco to td... unstopable vibration
Or, was Hagar trying to bypass the LDA so that he could nullify the turbo lag? If you take away the efforts of the LDA, these pumps will work like an N/A pump and provide fuel before boost is created. But, the problem here is that you tend to overfuel while waiting for the turbo to spin, raising the...

Re: eco to td... unstopable vibration
A switch to convert eco to td??? Ahhh, how does one comment on this and remain respectful?....... The "switch" is in your throttle foot. No, actually in your brain which sends an impulse to either push harder or not. Not sure what kind of strange little trip the deceased was on. Apparently...

Re: Well.. I bought another one.
How did you determine the updated mileage (400K)? Let's see, it you have all speeds (blower motor) BUT high, I don't think that is the resistor....right? It's the other way around with a resistor problem. Something which would really help this car, if indeed it has so many miles, is to replace the b...

Post a photo or two of it if handy.
If you are still planning the long trip, I would carry any pieces necessary to return to stock on the side of the road.

Re: Extended road trip, how would you prepare?
A lot has been put forth here. However, I don't really see anyone saying anything (unless I missed it) about renewing the seals in the trans (output flanges) or going through the driveshafts (boots, cv joint check, cleaning, and repacking cv's and checking the front spindle bearings). Nor did I see ...

Re: not charging, 91 Jetta TD
Wow, that first article is a work of art (although I did not actually go through it as such). This guy should have been paid something for all his work with photos, etc. The only difference I could see by skimming is that this alt. is the older Mk. I (for the most part) 3-prong hook-up. Yes, you can...

Re: not charging, 91 Jetta TD
If we are talking Bosch, you can replace the brushes for less that $15 here in USA. All you need is a soldering gun, some patience, a little bit of solder, maybe a small round file, and a steady hand. You can also carefully dress the slip rings with some very fine sandpaper and a couple of your fing...

Re: eco diesel engone bay question
Bbob: I got to thinking, there is sort of an alternative with the Eco transmision: you can run 185/65 - 14 tires on 6 inch VW alloy rims (like bottlecaps or teardrops) and that will give you about 1 inch taller tire over a 185/60 - 14 (standard size). Essentually, this would probably bring the final...

Re: eco diesel engone bay question
For me, I do like either the AGS's or the ACH. I live at higher elevation so I have never tried a gas (ACN) in a diesel. The AGS is kind of neat as it gets to overdrive a bit earlier than the ACH. But, sometimes the ACH is fine in harder pulls or at elevation. I've never bothered to install a 0.71 5...
