The pressure remaining in the lines will be close to the injectors' break-pressure. Once the pressure in the high-pressure chamber exceeds the line pressure, the delivery valves are forced open, making a continuous path from chamber to injector, as well as to the cutoff bore. So, while the stroke of...

Which seals were replaced? Was the governor cover opened?

If fuel is 'gushing' out the open delivery ports, it may be the control collar is not covering the transverse cutoff bore in the plunger.

In an otherwise functioning pump, blocked high pressure ports could stall the pump.

The change in displacement due to a missing washer seems insignificant to timing; considering the total volume of pressurized fuel includes the pressure-chamber, plunger bores & recesses, head passages, delivery valves, injector lines and injectors. They all are open to each other, above break p...

Regarding viscosity/lubricity fuel additives:

Valvoline 'racing' oil (ashless, non-detergent, SAE60) is available at Autozone... would that be acceptable?

So, why regard the timing advance as dynamic?

Seems more like a static advance, since it does not vary during operation.

The images of the bosch tool reminded me of small bicycle-chain presses.

They should be easy enough to modify for pump use, but it seemed like the ability to tweek in both directions might be useful.

Hagar: thanks for the fine detailing of your adventures. I enjoyed reading those six pages (but it took me three days).

Have you considered tapping the pressure-regulator for an adjustment screw? Would that be a bad idea?

Thanks for the reply. :D I resorted to driving the Westy for the weekend, as the Caddy refused to start. I'll tweek the Caddy's timing and replace the filter asap. I also read somewhere that vehicles should have the tank-strainer removed in locations where temperatures dip below 20F. The Caddy was p...

Missing cold-start lever?

Greetings, My '82 Caddy seems to be a FrankenDiesel: it came to me with the information that it holds an '84 1.6 Rabbit motor and '87 5-speed Jetta tranny. Furthermore , it has an IP that has no cold-start lever; nor does it have any controls connected to the electric device on the IP opposite where...
