Re: Sad day today. Hagar is gone.

:( I guess we all knew this day wasn't far off, but I'd hoped it would be a lot further in the future. I had always wanted to get up there but never found the time. Amazing how someone who you've only seen a photo of can have such an impact just through his writing and his spirit. I'm glad his SAGA ...

Re: NA --> ECO Conversion + Turbo Rebuild Kit

The turbo oil seals aren't positive seals. They are definitely not airtight!! Pressurized oil flows from the oil inlet around the turbo shaft, out the bearings and enters the oil drain part of the turbo. The drain portion of the turbo is at atmospheric pressure (it is not pressurized). The seals are...

Re: Possible crack in water flange

Might be dealer-only (that's where I got mine) but it was only about $7 at the dealer. Mine hadn't really cracked, it more had sort of warped. I think they just start to deform after a while. New O-ring would certainly be worth a try but it was no issue for me to get mine, I just walked in and he gr...

Re: Leaky Drum Brake

Another possibility is that when you engage the e-brake a piston is coming partly out of the wheel cylinder. This can happen if the brakes are not adjusted properly (the auto adjusters can stick sometimes) or if the drum is considerably worn and is now worn past the maximum diameter.

Re: Possible crack in water flange

The plastic water flanges should almost have a replacement interval laid out in the manual. They do fail as they age big time. Thankfully they're cheap and readily available though!

Re: Thermostat

There are some aftermarket gauges out there that will work with the VW-style senders. You just need to find a gauge that measures on the same scale as them.

Re: crank case vent hose?

Overall I think the runaway issues were really only prevalent on the very early engines - the 1.5 in particular. By the 1.6 hydro engines we've got much larger oil drains, improved intake design, etc. Definitely sounds like you're doing all the right things either way though!

Re: crank case vent hose?

The other potential helpful thing the line from the block to the head does is allow some of the oil that would otherwise be in the blowby to drain back in to the block. Jezzie uses about a liter every 1500 km thereabouts, so I've been thinking about adding the second hose to hopefully try and reduce...

Re: Missing AAZ Crankcase Breather

I think it helps drain oil back into the block rather than blowing it in to your intake as well, though I don't have one so I can't say for sure.

Re: A2 diesel into A3 gas - Please direct me to pertinent po

A2 diesel into A3 diesel body is pretty simple. I haven't seen a site or anything anywhere though - it's not a super common swap to do, most folks go the other way (A3 diesel into A2 body). The blocks are externally identical on the 1.6 and the 1.9 so basically you bolt the A3 mounts and everything ...

Re: A2 diesel into A3 gas - Please direct me to pertinent po

I've got one, though I didn't do the swap. I can probably answer most questions you might have, and can provide you with pictures, or whatever else you might need! First some of the basics: - Jezebel has all the A2 accessories (alt, PS pump, etc) - Jezebel has her original A3 transmission, it's a fa...

Re: Newbie here - looking for comments

Does it hurt the diesel engine to lug it around in the lowest gear? I baby it around mostly unless I am trying to get on a freeway and try to get in the lowest gear so I don’t rev the engine much. If I have a city stretch to drive, I will have it in 5th gear by 35 mph. Is that ok or no, or do these...

Re: '85 Golf w/ ACN 5-spd. leaks

A lot of it will depend how much time you spent in 5th while it was low. If you haven't been using it then it's probably fine. Jezebel is geared so tall I don't need 5th much unless I'm REALLY speeding! When fluid gets low then 5th ends up running dry. Long highway trips for instance with it low on ...

Re: Newbie here - looking for comments

Sounds like a fantastic find! Bed cover sounds like a great idea and really will make the truck even more useful. With that huge fuel tank too you must have more than 1500 miles of range, that's nutty!! As to the speedometer you can swap the gear in the transmission to get the speed back correct wit...
