Good new I have a 3rd type of a/c unit that uses the non-a/c blower. It wasn't in any of the info I looked in but hey I'll take it, $23 shipped for a new unit. There are no numbers on the blower oddly enough. I matched them by the picture, it seems to be one of the most common vw blowers.

That is a non-A/C blower, the a/c model has a squirrel cage on each end of the motor (so 2 fans) and has no plastic housing.

it was cross referenced as a diesel starter and looked identical to the original I took out, now that I've done it a couple times now I can change her in 30 minutes flate as long as I don't have to replace the starter bushing.

Its been making a real bad bearing squeal for a while, all the speeds had worked fine, now the fan does nothing.

Mine went out and I can't find a new one, I found some used but rather have a new unit if I'm going to all that trouble.

It seemed like it was average size but I've never seen a gas starter. I paid around $100 for a rebuild from Napa.

It ended up being a bad starter, got the new one installed and she works great.

Changing a head gasket is a cinch and if you get more oil in your coolant that would be the next thing on my list to replace.

At highway speeds there is always heat it is just every other speed that stinks. But even at highway speeds it is not as good as my beetle or suburban. I will check the temps like you said, that is a good idea.

I will try that, my TDI beetle has a really good heating system the only problem is my wife is always driving it, it is actually a really nice ride.
