Re: Head warped .014" - bake it or mill it?
The TTY bolts yielded LONG before I had finished the last 180 due to the reduced surface friction from the synthetic. Yup, lube affects torque, which is why ARP has you use their special lube. On the upside, it's nice to hear that the bolt will fail before the threads in the block do. Bolts are che...

Re: 1981 1.6D rabbit freshening
When putting the flywheel on a complete longblock, like I will be doing this week when I do clutch ,PP etc and mate the tranny to it. Is there only one way it will go on so as not to mess up timing or TDC on the flywheel? I have not done a diesel before and would be happy to not have any surprises....

Re: A1 engine into A2 body engine mounts
The engine I got for my Mk2 Jetta came from a Mk1, and I just removed the motor mount hoop with an angle grinder and chisel. Seems to work fine.

Re: Head warped .014" - bake it or mill it?
My question is: How can the head NOT PULL DOWN FLAT against the block if it does not lie flat when you squeeze it down with 700+ pounds of clamp force? The gasket is there to take up any irregularities. Spray two light coats of Permatex copper coat on the gasket (both sides), Tried it: new head gas...

Re: I learned a important lesson today.
thought I had read about some kind of alternator belt guard as well? I have never seen a picture of one or seen one for sale, just wondering if that also provides an extra level of protection for the timing belt? From what I understand, it's a splash shield to keep water off the belt so it doesn't ...

Re: I learned a important lesson today.
Was this a car with, or without, A/C? The alt and alt belt are in different places, depending. On my gas-to-diesel swap with a mishmash of Mk1 and Mk2 parts, I don't think I'm going to be able to fit an upper timing cover on...

You're probably right. I didn't realize MagicBus has PS.coke wrote:I do believe that in order to delete the AC, you will need an MK2/A2 bracket, because the A2 bracket (I thought) used a different power steering bracket design that won't accommodate the MK2 one.

Re: Another Alternator Belt Tensioner Fix?
With yesterday's belt replacement, I was able to reduce the backbend, ... Hopefully, reducing backbend will ameliorate or eliminate my shred problem. Yup, that's why I used a 3" pulley for my tensioner, to be as gentle on the backbend as possible. I think another benefit of deleting the front ...

Re: My A/C alternator tensioner solution
On the other side it would only take up slack in the belt and see very little strain on the bearing. I agree, but due to the alternator belt overlapping the timing belt, http://i52.tinypic.com/2yvwhtl.jpg putting it on the other side means the pulley diameter must be smaller which puts a sharper be...

Re: My A/C alternator tensioner solution
Just as a curiosity, where did you acquire your lathe from? I've been looking at Harbor Freight models, but never can tell if those are worth the moneys. Yup it's from Harbor Freight. They only stock the 7x10 model in-store, so that's what I got. There is also a 7x12 available on their website whic...

My A/C alternator tensioner solution
Not long ago I purchased a mini-lathe so I could do a little of my own machine work. The lathe indeed came in handy for my Jetta, letting me make a 2" blockoff plate for my BOV delete and a spacer for my custom alternator arm. http://i52.tinypic.com/mmwygn.jpg http://i52.tinypic.com/2ey88zm.jpg...

I'll gladly pay for the inefficiency if it keeps me warm.DanHoug wrote:the convective losses from the recirculating heaters have always been too great for my taste, taking longer to warm the block with 3 times the power.

Re: 91 Jetta, not starting in cold - update
Bad news is, the reason it wasn't plugged in is because my block heater failed. Never had that happen before. I checked out the cord, and it is good. Open circuit on the block heater. Yep the block heater on my car was dead when I got it. I remember the nut/stud was all rusted up so you may want to...

Re: Another Alternator Belt Tensioner Fix?
Forgive the simplistic question. I don't see an explicit mention of it, but it looks like you ADDED some threads to the bolt? How did you do that? Using a die, thread it on to the existing threads, then just keep right on turning and it will cut new threads into the blank area. Use lots of cutting ...

Re: 82 VW jetta
Mostly depends on the condition of the motor mounts and the idle speed. If yours is smooth, the motor mounts must be in good shape, and your idle must be set a little on the high side.country53 wrote:Bled the air out of fuel system and started it, it ran well. It was very smooth to.
