Re: Trouble-shooting Starting Discrepancies

I had this experience. What happens is when the engine is warm, the pistons/rings seal better, and you get better compression. Better compression is harder for the starter to turn so it goes slower. My starter eventually got to the point where it would barely get over the compression humps when the ...

Re: 82 VW jetta

just run a tap into the old bushing, keep turning it until the bushing backs out. i did 2 this past summer and it is easy easy to do. you can search this list for the tap size to use but it isn't critical... just one that lightly grabs the bushing is fine. US or metric. 13mm or 1/2", coarse th...

Re: Vibrating pedal with brief power loss

A Google search turned up 431-721-559. No promises that's accurate though!

Jack, the owner of this site, could probably hook you up with one.

Re: Vibrating pedal with brief power loss

I had the same symptom -- vibrating accelerator -- until one day I had no accelerator. Turns out the hook in the pedal end of the accelerator cable goes through a rubber bushing -- a bushing that falls apart over time. When this happens, engine vibration is transmitted directly to the pedal, and in ...

Re: Another Alternator Belt Tensioner Fix?

Does anybody know what RPM the alternator turns at? At redline, 5,000 engine RPM (10,000 crank RPM), the alt might see what -- 20,000RPM if the crank:alt pulleys are 2:1 in size? I need to do this mod on my Jetta and want to make sure I get a bearing that can handle the speed...

Do Mk2 engines sit crooked?

I have a thread over on the 'Vortex but I'm getting conflicting answers and I trust you guys more. :) Is it normal for the passenger side (of a US vehicle) of an engine of a Mk2 to sit way higher than the transmission side? I'm getting a serious slant/tilt in my newly rebuilt and reinstalled TD and ...

Also the buzzer on the back of the speedo can malfunction and give false alarms.

Re: New guy; pulling hair out

If you go to the junkyard, you can harvest some Bosch relay holders and fuse holders that clip to top of VW fuseboxes. These can clip to each other in interesting ways so you can build your own custom electric systems: http://i52.tinypic.com/x35kz9.jpg I'm using two relay holders that will be popula...

I just had this issue on my Rabbit when temps fell below freezing. One time it took a lot of cranking to start; the next time, I ran the battery down trying to start. The pump was totally empty of fuel and no amount of cranking could get fuel into it. My problem was twofold. One, my fuel tank vent l...

Wrist pins dont fit in new bushings?!

So, I just pressed new wrist pin bushings into my connecting rods, but they are too small for the wrist pins! I know you're supposed to heat up the pistons to 140°F in an oil bath, and when I do that, the wrist pins do fit the pistons -- but they still won't go into an 140° connecting rod bushing....

Valve shim holder/organizer

I seem to recall coke or libbypapa or somebody had a neat valve shim holder, but couldn't find the thread. So I rolled my own for about $2: http://i56.tinypic.com/2gskco3.jpg It's 1¼" PVC slit in half and bolted back-to-back to provide a stable base. Long bolts keep the shims from sliding off ...

If it is the engine main seal, inspect the crankshaft sealing surface for grooves. If it's severely grooved, even a new seal will leak there.

Ah I see, I had not seen that type of flexboard before. Mine puts two instruments at the bottom of the tachometer, rather than one on top and one at bottom. Say, wouldn't putting a gauge on the top of the tacho make it kind of hard to read the RPM at the top of it's needle sweep though? Anyhoo, what...

Not to derail this thread, but it looks like the upshift display (the whole thing) could be removed and a stock coolant temperature gauge mounted in its place, say... for monitoring oil temps, meaning one less VDO cockpit 2 1/16" gauge cluttering up the dash (really trying to avoid the 'Cessna...
