Re: air in fuel line?
It is an air leak on one of the fuel lines or of one of the seals in the pump. There is no fuel check valve on the vanagon.

Re: WTB 11mm rebuildable 1.6 engine with or without head
A 1.5 head on a 1.6 block will result in raising the compression significantly.

I have too much going on right now to get to it. I'll keep you posted if I do, tho.

The stock 50 amp strip fuses are readily available for less than $1 each. Get two and add one to the glove box.

Re: Vane stlye pump
All the 1.6 vane pumps were the same so either all fit or none fit. I'm not up on the nuances of the 1.5 and so can't really say for certain, but I think all will fit.

Re: Bosch VE pump; won't idle after rebuild
Running from a jug has not eliminated air as a possibility. Air could be entering the pump at the fuel inlet, main shaft seal, internal pressure regulator or the non-pressurized side of the dynamic advance piston even if running from a jug. Using clear lines for the supply and return is the first st...

Re: Speedometer / Odometer Discrepancy
The speedometer is a friction type coupling to indicate how fast your going. Over time, this friction is subject to wear and corrosion to give incorrect speeds. Actually the speedo is not a friction coupling, but rather magnetic. The cable spins a magnet in the speedo and the motion of the spinning...

WTB: Early cluster with tach (gas or diesel)
I'm looking for an early rabbit/scirocco cluster with tachometer. Should look like this:
I'd actually prefer a gas tach, but w-terminal diesel tach is ok too (if they had them back then). Let me know cost shipped to 86001.

Re: 1.6 non-turbo needs serpentine belt kit
ABA serp bracket won't work. Serp setup from AAZ or AHU/1Z will work, but you should weld on a bracket to the injection pump to catch the fourth bolt. Removing non-functional A/C is a bad idea, IMO, but removing a functional A/C system is crazy unless you don't care at all about ever selling the veh...

Re: Lost key way
Just semantics, but I found that funny. You lost the key. The keyway is what the key slides into. Kinda like saying your buttonhole fell off.

Re: Head gasket - which way?
The notch/hole location is irrelevant. The oil supply up to the head is VERY relevant.
