New quarter/wing/vent glass

I went ahead and swapped in some non-moving vent/quarter/wing windows yesterday. These replaced the glued on style. I was tired of looking at the gobs of silicone, L brackets, and other methods to hold them in place over the years. I am happy with the result, they are clean, quiet & low profile ...

Re: 1979 Diesel 2 Door

As of this week the car is now titled, registered, and legal! I have been driving it around town and I like the ACH transmission so far.

Re: good transmission for mpgs?

That AWY has a 0.89 5th - I am pretty sure you can swap in any 5th gear set you find on a forum for sale, I see them a lot. I doubt it`d be worth going backwards to the 1982 transmission unless it was a rare/popular one like the 7A. I just swapped a ACH into my 1979 and really like it around town. S...

Re: Adventures in Injector Testing

Got my replacement canister today for the pop tester - so i`m ready to go. I started by disassembling and checking all the injectors, i`m going to build all the best nozzles first, see how they do. I have 16 France nozzles, 12 German nozzles, 2 india nozzles, and the rest are Brazil. I`ll start by u...

Re: leaky injector

I had one of these ... ended up finding that the injector seat below the heat shield had deteriorated away. You might want to grab a new heat shield and pull the injector, see how it looks.

Re: Adventures in Injector Testing

Injectors are such an important part of getting an old diesel running right. I used to have to go to the local diesel shop to have mine tested or have the bosch service center balance them, that isn't cheap. Now I pay myself to check, balance or rebuild my own injectors. It's so handy to be able to...

Re: Adventures in Injector Testing

Here are the shims after cleaning & sorting: http://onespeedfast.com/rabbit-forums/injectors/sorted-shims.jpg There are 6 or more of every size, and spanning 1.10 to 1.95mm - however, since shims are inherently not precise (within .02mm) I think this collection spans every size in 1/100th of a m...

Adventures in Injector Testing

I`m working on a little collection of pics & links from my pop testing journey. I have collected about 40 injectors including the not-so-good ones currently on my car. I plan to test and balance every single one that is still in good working shape, and rob parts off of all others. Yesterday I dr...

Re: Apparently don't have Vicon rubber in my 86 diesel golf

Presuming you mean Viton... Two years of F150 probably have cost considerably more than a pump re-seal and a bit more.[/list] Yeah ... driving my rabbit for the past year saved me $1000 in fuel over a v8 I drove for a year before that. I vote for DIY pump re-seal if its necessary and you don`t find...

Re: rolling coal in netural

I agree with what he said ^ i`ve never been able to get a really precision time without loosening the cam sprocket and tensioning by hand. I would say there could be some slack in the old belt and all sorts of possible "wear" variables.

Re: vacuum pump chack valve

I don`t really have an answer but next time you are in a wrecking yard look for one of these: http://www.partsplaceinc.com/uploads/images/products/large/13743f.jpg And make sure you grab the block off plate without the barb fitting sort of like this: http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/images/Product...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing Installation

Yeah those axles are necessary to hold everything together too. I had one fall apart just with the weight of a car on it after moving it without a CV. But, it was a pretty bad bearing. ;) The new Chinese bearings I handled not too long ago had that super slight play in them too - I returned and got ...

Re: Rusted battery bracket/bolt - any tips?

Yeah makes sense .. best I could say is trying to cut a slot in it and using a flat head on a driver like that - no matter what its going to be a PITA with that battery in there. :(
