tests
after multiple tests with no results I finally pulled my hot wire from my volt gauge and put it on the bar gauge and it pinned. so there is a problem with my hot wire. I am using a fuse jumper from the local parts house. it has a hot lead wire coming out of it and two places to put fuses in it for t...

installed and working
I just added a second wire on the stud sticking out of the fuel shutoff solenoid on the pump (lower center of picture): http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTricks/Tachometer/Images/tach_16.jpg Add an in-line fuse in that wire. thanks. volt gauge installed as above and working. I put in a 10amp fuse...

light supply
Where have you taken an instrument light supply from? Not from the ground side of another display light circuit I hope, else things will be pretty dim  ? I took it from the dimmer blue/grey wire on the headlight switch. I have continuity from the back of the dimmer switch to the last gauge in...

gauge problem diagnostic
With the sender disconnected it should read 5 bar or even further to the right, and then drop to the left of 0 when you turn off the car. cool. so powered, and with sender diconnected it should pin clockwise. I'll check it. thanks I think I did this test way back when on the 86 when I was trying to...

Wiring 101
this is pathetic. I put in three gauges. I wired vacuum light, 5 bar with no light, volt just the light, tomorrow the dial. results= no lights and dial on bar gauge not functioning. so I am 0 for whatever. sucks. I jumped all the ground to one lead on the ground station above the fuse panel. ...

soleoid clarification
To be used in the manner VWCaddy is suggesting you actually want to tap into the wire right at the stop solenoid... this way you can see that power is making it all the way to the solenoid. Tapping inside the cab will work but defeats this small additional troubleshooting advantage. BTW, my caveat ...

tapping fuel shut off solenoid wire
so if I tap into the fuel shut off solenoid wire it will give me a reading on both the battery charge as well as the power to the solenoid? Yes. The wire for the solenoid comes right off the battery, through the ignition switch. And since there is a relatively small current in that circuit, it'll r...

oil pressure 5 bar gauge and sender install
I installed a 5 bar oil pressure sender in the head and a 5 bar gauge in my radio delete. gauge is not working. how do I test to see if I have done something wrong or if one is no good. I have no bulb socket for it yet. though that doesn't matter. I ran a wire from the sender to the gage on the G. I...

Mine is wired off the fuel shutoff solenoid on the injector pump. It gets a good clean voltage when the engine is running and importantly it shuts off when the engine is off. Leaving a volt meter running all the time is a little added drain on the battery. Also that point is a handy troubleshooting...

Volt gauge
what can it be used for?
for the battery. I have also read fuel shut off solenoid. and others.
I don't know what I want to hook it up to. I was thinking of reading the battery. if I go with that...how do I install the hot wire? to a switched on power or staright off the battery?

above my fuse panel is a strip with male wire leads and two ground/brown females attached. there are maybe ten more males available. is this a grounding station?
I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

I use WD-40 and compressed air to clean them. Sometimes, I'll use a brass brush or a maroon scotchbrite pad. I always use compressed air to blow anything out of or off of any parts that are going into a pump. I wouldn't use WD-40 for assembly. I actually use vaseline. Andrew huh. so the compressed ...

taken apart..how to clean
I have the pump from my 90 taken apart following this thread. it says, "It goes without saying that once the pump is apart, all the pieces must be rigourously cleaned. In addition, it also greatly helps reassembly to lubricate all parts that adjust, rub or slide together with penetrating oil.&q...

new vdo vac gauge
I just put in a new vdo vac gauge.
looks cool.
vac gauge is zeroing out in wvo filter. but does not in diesel.
what is that saying about my diesel filter? that it needs to be drained?
why would one zero and the other not?
