If they all heat up and glow, they're fine. My guess is your starter is not cranking fast enough.

Maybe I misunderstood. Did the stud pull out of the solenoid, or does it just turn 90 degrees or so? If it's the latter, I *think* my remedy will work just fine.

I couldn't figure out how to take the solenoid apart to get inside. I think they must be pressed together.

I put the cable between the two nuts. Initially I thought that I'd have to buy a new starter, that wasn't the case.

I had sort of the same problem with the stud situation. I still really don't understand how it works, and I hope this helps. When I would tighten the nut for the cable all the way the stud would turn all the way to the right and would not make contact. Thus, the starter wouldn't spin. What I did was...

The only problem with this is that there is a circuit in VW's to shut the headlights off when cranking the starter. This works well with other cars though.
